cPanel is a Linux-based control panel that gives you a visual dashboard to manage your web hosting: email accounts, files, databases, domains, and backups, without touching a command line. It is the screen most Malaysian shared-hosting customers log in to. cPanel handles your account, while a companion panel called WHM handles the server behind it. It is paid, proprietary software your host licenses, not something you buy directly.
What can you do in cPanel?
cPanel lets you run the everyday tasks of a hosting account through a point-and-click interface, so you do not need to be a system administrator. Everything that would otherwise take a command line gets a button instead.
The common jobs sit in one place. You create and manage email accounts on your domain, upload or edit files, and set up the databases a site like WordPress needs.
It also handles the housekeeping. You add domains and subdomains, install an SSL certificate, run and download a backup, and check basic usage stats. Many hosts add a one-click app installer for WordPress inside it.
The point of cPanel is reach without expertise. It puts the controls a hosting account needs in front of an owner who never wants to see a terminal.
cPanel vs WHM: what is the difference?
cPanel and WHM are two panels that ship together but do different jobs, and knowing which is which saves confusion when a host mentions them. One manages your site; the other manages the server.

On normal shared hosting, you only ever see cPanel, because the host runs WHM for you behind the scenes. If you buy a reseller or a server plan, you get WHM too, to create and manage cPanel accounts for others. One license covers both panels.
What does cPanel run on?
cPanel runs only on Linux, specifically on server distributions like AlmaLinux, CloudLinux, Rocky Linux, and Ubuntu (cPanel documentation, accessed 2026). It does not run on Windows at all.
This matters when you pick hosting. A Windows-based host uses a different panel, usually Plesk, so a plan advertised with cPanel is a Linux plan. For most Malaysian small business sites, including anything on WordPress, Linux with cPanel is the normal and correct choice.
