The first thing this hits is your site's first response. A nearby server answers sooner. A far one keeps the visitor on a blank screen for longer.

How much does server location actually matter?

Server location matters most for the first response and least for anything a CDN can cache. A content delivery network is a group of servers that caches your content close to end users (Cloudflare), serving it from the data center nearest each visitor. That largely removes distance as a problem for images, styles, and scripts.

A CDN does not replace your host, though. Cloudflare's own guidance says a CDN cannot replace proper web hosting.
