What Is UTM Tracking?

Updated 19 September 2026

Jump to section

UTM tracking adds short tags to the end of a link's URL so your analytics can record which campaign, source, and medium sent each visitor. The five tags are utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, and utm_content. Google Analytics reads them and sorts your traffic by campaign. It turns a vague sense that "people found us" into a clear record of which effort actually worked.

What does UTM tracking do?

UTM tracking labels a link so your analytics can trace each visit back to a specific campaign, not lump it under generic traffic.

Without tags, a click from your email newsletter and a click from a Facebook post can both arrive unlabeled. Analytics often files that under "direct," which tells you nothing about what drove it.

A UTM-tagged link carries its own origin inside the URL. When someone clicks it, the tags travel with them, and your analytics reads them on arrival.

UTM stands for Urchin Tracking Module, a naming convention that predates Google Analytics and that most analytics tools now understand.

The five UTM parameters

A UTM link uses five parameters, and Google treats three as essential and two as optional. The essential three are utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign; utm_term and utm_content are optional.

Each tag is a key=value pair added after a ? in the URL.

Parameter What it records Example
utm_source Where the visit comes from newsletter, facebook, google
utm_medium The marketing medium email, social, cpc
utm_campaign The campaign's name raya-2026, new-menu
utm_term A paid search keyword web-design-kl
utm_content Which link or version was clicked header-button, footer-link

Source: parameter names and roles follow Google Analytics campaign URL conventions.

Put together, a tagged link looks like this:

yoursite.com.my/promo?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=raya-2026

That URL tells your analytics the visitor came from Facebook, through a social post, as part of a Raya 2026 campaign (an illustrative link, not a real campaign).

How UTM data appears in Google Analytics

Google Analytics reads the tags and sorts your visitors by source, medium, and campaign, so each shows up in your acquisition reports. You can then see how many visits, and how many conversions, each campaign brought.

To build the links, Google offers a free Campaign URL Builder. You fill in the fields, and it assembles the tagged URL for you, so you never hand-type the tags and risk a typo.

Clean tags are also what let you tell whether your SEO is working month by month, because each channel stays separated instead of blurring into one number.

The mistake we see most often is links shared with no tags at all. Months of clicks then pile up under "direct," and nobody can say which post, email, or ad brought them. Tagging the links you control fixes that at the source.

Where to use UTM tags, and where not to

Use UTM tags only on links you control that point to your site from outside it. Email campaigns, social posts, paid ads, QR codes, and partner links are the right places.

Never add UTM tags to internal links between your own pages. Analytics starts a fresh attribution the moment it sees UTM tags, so tagging an internal link overwrites the real source with your own site.

That single rule prevents most UTM mess. Tag the doorways into your site, never the hallways inside it.

Frequently asked questions

Are UTM tags bad for SEO?

No, UTM tags do not hurt your SEO when used correctly. They live on the campaign links you share, not on the organic pages Google ranks. The one risk is letting tagged URLs get indexed, which can create duplicate URLs; a canonical tag and tagging only external links avoid that.

Which UTM parameters do I actually need?

Three: utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign. Google treats these as the essential set, and most reports break your traffic down by exactly these three. The other two, utm_term and utm_content, are optional and mainly useful for paid search keywords or for testing two versions of the same link.

Do UTM tags work outside Google Analytics?

Yes, UTM tags are a shared convention that most analytics platforms read, not a Google-only feature. Google Analytics, and many other tools, all recognize the same five parameters. That is why one tagged link works no matter which analytics tool you happen to run.

Can I make UTM links shorter or tidier?

Yes, run the tagged URL through a link shortener before you share it. The full tagged link can look long and cluttered in a social bio or under a printed QR code. A shortener hides the tags behind a neat link while still passing them to your analytics on the click.

Does UTM tracking identify individual visitors?

No, UTM tracking records campaign labels, not personal identities. The tags describe the link, not the human who clicked it. It tells you a visit came from your Raya email, not who the person is. Any personal data your analytics collects is governed separately, which our note on PDPA and your website covers.
