What Happens If Your Domain Expires?

When a domain expires, your website and business email stop working within days. The address then runs through three timed stages. First an auto-renew grace period, then a 30-day redemption window where you can still recover it for a fee, then a 5-day pending-delete. Miss all three and anyone can register the name. Renewing on time costs far less than recovering a lapsed domain.

What breaks the moment a domain lapses?

Your website and email fail first.

Both depend on the domain resolving through its DNS records. Once the registry suspends the name, visitors get an error, and mail sent to your address bounces.

The timing is not always instant. Some registrars keep a site live through a short grace window. Others suspend it the day the domain expires. Either way, the outage usually arrives long before the domain is deleted.

Anything tied to the address goes with it. That includes the SSL certificate, contact forms that send from the domain, and any login using email on it. How long before an expired domain is gone for good?

An expired domain moves through fixed stages, and each one tells you how much time is left. The table shows the lifecycle for a global .com and a Malaysian .my.

ICANN's Expired Registration Recovery Policy sets the 30-day redemption and 5-day pending-delete for .com domains. The redemption fee is set by each registrar, so there is no fixed ringgit figure.

Can you get an expired domain back?

You can recover it in the first two stages, and the cost rises the longer you wait. During the grace period, recovery is just paying the normal renewal.

Once the domain drops into redemption, the registry disables it. Restoring it then costs a redemption fee on top of a full year's renewal. That fee is deliberately steep, which is the whole reason to never reach this stage. In pending-delete, no one can save the name, and you wait for it to release.

After release the address is open to anyone. A name with existing traffic or brand value can be taken within minutes. We have dealt with lapsed-domain trouble more than once, and recovering a name a third party has grabbed is always slower than any renewal.

How do you make sure a domain never lapses?

Turn on auto-renew and keep a valid payment method on the account. The most common cause of a lost domain is an expired card, not a forgotten date. Auto-renew only works if it has something to charge.

Keep the domain's contact email on an address you check, and never one hosted on the same domain. Renewal and expiry warnings go there. If that mailbox dies with the domain, you lose the warning and the address together.

Own the account yourself. A pattern we see is a business that cannot say whether it controls its own domain. That becomes urgent the day a former developer holds the login. Register the name in your company's name, keep it under your own registrar account, and treat renewals as part of your website governance. Names with existing traffic, backlinks, or a known brand are the ones most likely to be taken quickly. Lapsing a valuable domain is a real risk, not a theoretical one.

Does an expired domain also stop my email?

Yes. Business email that uses your domain, such as name@yourcompany.com, depends on that domain resolving. It fails when the domain is suspended.
