Who Writes the Website Copy?

Someone must be named in the quote: you, the agency, or a hybrid where you supply the facts and the agency writes. Web design pricing in Malaysia usually covers design and build, with copywriting priced separately. Established agencies charge from RM500 per page, freelance and hybrid models cost less. Fix the model before the project starts, because in our experience project delays most often sit on the client side, and the thing being waited on is often the words.

Why isn't copywriting included in the build price?

Because writing is a separate skill billed as separate work. A website quote in Malaysia prices design, build, and setup; the words that fill the pages are an input the quote assumes someone will provide.

Published Malaysian web-design pricing guides put established-agency copywriting from about RM500 per page, a consensus of three independent sources verified 16 July 2026. We do not link competitor pricing pages. Freelance writers and hybrid models come in well below that, so read the figure as the top tier, not the market average.

The practical consequence: if nobody asked "who writes the copy?" before signing, the default answer is you, discovered mid-project. That surprise is a classic entry on the hidden costs of owning a website.

Which model fits your project?

The right model depends on who holds the knowledge and who has the time. There are three that work.

Model Who does what Fits best when
You write, agency edits You draft; the agency tightens and formats You know the business cold and can commit hours
Agency writes Interviews you, drafts every page Time is scarcer than budget
Hybrid You supply facts per page; agency writes Most SME projects, in practice

The hybrid earns its place because each side does what only it can do. Nobody knows your services, customers, and objections like you; nobody should have to guess them like a writer starting cold.

Whichever model you pick, the agency should still shape the page structure, from which pages the site needs down to each page's call to action.

Why does copy delay so many launches?

Because a build can be finished while the site still cannot launch: pages without words are not pages. A pattern we see repeatedly is a project waiting not on design or development, but on content the business meant to send weeks ago.

That is rarely laziness. Writing about your own business is genuinely hard, and it competes with running that business every day.

Two fixes work. Agree the copy model and per-page deadlines inside the project schedule, exactly as website timelines recommend, or move the writing onto the agency so the bottleneck is paid to disappear.

What does good website copy need?

Scannability first, because visitors do not read pages top to bottom. Nielsen Norman Group's classic web-reading research found "79 percent of our test users always scanned any new page", while only 16 percent read word by word (NN/g, 1997). Short paragraphs, real headings, and front-loaded answers exist for that reader.

The same shape now serves a second audience. AI engines quote pages that answer questions directly, which is the working principle of answer engine optimization, and copy written answer-first serves both readers at once.

Substance is the other half. Real prices, real timelines, and real specifics are what make a page persuasive and trustworthy; adjectives are what fill the space where those facts should be.

Can AI write your website copy?

It can draft, and Google is fine with that. Its guidance on AI-generated content says "appropriate use of AI or automation is not against our guidelines", and that using AI gives content no special gains: "It's just content". Ranking questions are covered in does AI content rank on Google.

What AI cannot supply is the part that makes copy work: your actual prices, process, photos of real jobs, and the judgment calls only you can make. Left un-directed, generated copy converges on the same interchangeable paragraphs every competitor can generate too.

So the honest role for AI is drafting speed inside one of the three models, never a fourth model that removes the human who knows the business.

Frequently asked questions

Does a web design agency write the copy for me?

Not by default in Malaysia. Most build quotes assume you supply the content, and copywriting appears as a separate line when requested.

Ask directly before signing: who writes, who edits, and what happens to the schedule when pages are late.

How much does website copywriting cost in Malaysia?

Published Malaysian pricing guides put established-agency copywriting from about RM500 per page, rising with research depth, interviews, and revisions. Freelance writers and hybrid models come in lower, and bilingual work, English and Bahasa Malaysia, typically costs more per page.

Against the cost of a stalled launch, paid copy is often the less expensive option.

Who writes copy in a website revamp?

Start from the existing site, because words that already bring inquiries are data, not clutter. A revamp rewrite keeps what demonstrably works, fixes what reads badly, and fills the gaps.

The same three models apply; the difference is the audit that comes first.

Should website copy be in English or Bahasa Malaysia?

Launch in the language your customers actually search in, one language done properly. Serving several languages is an architecture decision, with separate URLs per language version, never a copywriting afterthought bolted on at the end.

Writing both languages roughly doubles the copy work on every page, which is why the decision belongs in the quote. The trade-offs sit in our multilingual website guide.

Who owns the copy after the project?

You should. Whether you wrote it or paid the agency to, the contract should state the business owns the final text, so a future revamp or vendor change never requires permission.

Treat copy like the domain name: an asset, not a rental.

What should I prepare if I write the copy myself?

Per page: the one question that page answers, the facts only you know, prices you are willing to publish, and the next step you want the visitor to take. Then write like you talk to a customer.

Your agency should supply the structure and edit the result; that is the "you write, agency edits" model working as designed.

Words are part of the build

Storming Solutions builds websites for Malaysian businesses, and we scope copywriting explicitly in every quote: compulsory, optional, and to-be-confirmed costs stated upfront. A launch date is only real when the words have an owner. We hold one opinion firmly: copy that states real facts beats polished vagueness on every page that matters.
