Why Does AI Say Wrong or Outdated Things About Your Business?

Updated 22 September 2026

Jump to section

AI says wrong or outdated things about your business for three main reasons. Its training data has a cutoff date, so anything newer is unknown to the base model. It cannot always read your site live, so it falls back on stale memory. And your own web presence may be thin or inconsistent, so it guesses or repeats the wrong fact. You fix it by letting AI crawlers in, publishing clear and consistent information, and keeping your key pages current.

None of these is bad luck. Each is a cause you can find and address.

Cause What it looks like The fix
Training cutoff Names an old price, address, or dropped service Keep pages current, and be crawlable so live search finds them
No live read Answers from memory, or hits a blocked crawler Allow AI crawlers in robots.txt
Thin or inconsistent facts Merges conflicting details, or names a competitor Publish one clear, consistent source of truth

Cause 1: the model has a knowledge cutoff

The first reason is that a model only knows the world up to a fixed date. Large language models are trained on data collected until a set point, then frozen. Ask about something that changed after that point, and the base model has no record of it.

Anthropic documents this plainly for its Claude models. Its model documentation publishes a "reliable knowledge cutoff" date for every Claude model, the point past which its knowledge thins out. OpenAI lists the same field, a "knowledge cutoff", for each of its models. It is an industry-wide property, not a quirk of one engine.

Sources: Anthropic model documentation, "Reliable knowledge cutoff" per-model values (platform.claude.com/docs/en/models/overview), and OpenAI model documentation, "Knowledge cutoff" per-model fields (developers.openai.com/api/docs/models), both retrieved September 2026.

So if you moved premises, changed your prices, or dropped a service last month, an engine relying only on training may still describe the old version. The information is not wrong on purpose. It is simply from before the model's cutoff.

Cause 2: it cannot read your site live

The second reason is that the engine did not fetch your current pages. Newer assistants can search the web while they answer, a method called retrieval-augmented generation. It pairs the model's frozen memory with live results, so a good answer quotes something current rather than something remembered.

Two things stop that live read. Sometimes the engine simply does not retrieve for a given question, and answers from memory alone. Other times it tries, but your site turns the crawler away.

An engine can only quote a page its crawler is allowed to reach. ChatGPT's live citations come from OAI-SearchBot, OpenAI's search crawler, not from the training-only GPTBot. This split is why where ChatGPT gets its answers is worth understanding.

If your robots.txt blocks the crawler an engine uses, the model cannot see your update, so it guesses from old data. Deciding which crawlers to allow is part of the fix.

Cause 3: your web presence is thin or inconsistent

The third reason sits on your own site. When the facts about your business are scattered or contradictory, an engine has nothing solid to anchor to. It then picks whichever version looks most confident, which is often the wrong one, or a competitor's.

The most common version is inconsistent detail. Your business name, address, or phone number reads one way on your homepage, another in your page code, and a third on an old directory listing.

In our experience, these details drift apart whenever a business moves or changes a number, and no one updates every copy. An engine reading three different answers cannot tell which is current. A single clear source of truth beats three half-updated ones.

How to fix wrong AI answers about your business

You fix wrong AI answers by removing each cause in turn, starting with access. Nothing else helps if the engine cannot read your current pages.

Work through four steps in order:

  1. Let the crawlers in. Check your robots.txt for blocks on AI crawlers like OAI-SearchBot, then remove the ones you did not mean to set.
  2. State the facts clearly, in one place. Put your current name, address, services, and prices on your own pages, in plain text a crawler can read.
  3. Make every copy agree. Align your site content, your page code, and your key listings so they tell one story.
  4. Keep it current. When something changes, update your own pages first, since that is the source engines return to.

An AI visibility audit runs these checks in one pass and shows where an engine is reading the wrong thing. Getting named correctly is the same craft as getting mentioned by AI assistants in the first place.

After the fixes, re-testing the engines over the following weeks tells you whether the correction took. That is the job of measuring AI visibility.

Frequently asked questions

Why does ChatGPT have old information about my business?

Usually because it answered from training data, not a live search. Its model was trained up to a cutoff date, so a recent change is invisible to it unless it searches the web and reaches your site.

If your pages are current and its search crawler is allowed in, the odds of a fresh answer rise. If the crawler is blocked or your pages are stale, it repeats what it remembers.

How do I correct a wrong fact an AI states about my business?

Correct it at the source, on your own website, then make every other copy match. Update your pages with the right detail in plain text, align your page code and key listings, and confirm your site admits the AI crawlers.

You cannot edit the model directly, so you change what it can read. The next crawl and answer should reflect it, though it takes time rather than a single click.

Can I directly edit what AI says about my company?

No. You do not control the model, and there is no dashboard to correct its output. What you control is the information it reads: your pages, their code, and your listings.

Make those clear, current, and consistent, and you improve what the engine has to work with. That is the whole of the influence you have, and it is real but indirect.

Does blocking AI crawlers cause wrong answers?

It can. If you block the crawler an engine uses to read live pages, the engine falls back on older training data, which may be wrong or outdated.

Blocking makes sense for content you sell or want kept private. For a business that wants correct AI answers, an accidental block is a common and self-inflicted cause.

How long until AI reflects my corrected information?

Days to weeks, not instantly. The engine has to re-crawl your updated pages, and its answers shift as that fresh data feeds in.

There is no publish button that forces it. Update your pages, keep them consistent, and re-check the engines monthly to watch the correction land.
