Can You Export Your Website from Wix or Squarespace?

Updated 14 October 2026

Jump to section

Mostly no. Wix does not let you export your site to another host at all, because it runs on Wix's own proprietary technology. Squarespace exports only a partial file: your text, images, and one blog, but not your design, store, or custom code. Both let you take your domain name and your written content. Neither lets you take the actual site you built.

Can you export a Wix site?

No. Wix does not support moving your site to another host in any form.

Wix states plainly that "your Wix site is a standard HTML5 site, and is built with Wix's technology". It also says the site "needs to be hosted and operated on Wix's servers" (Wix, August 2026).

The reason is the platform's design. Wix's own help page says the architecture "does not support external hosting since it uses Wix's proprietary technology". The site only runs on Wix.

You are not left with nothing. Wix confirms "the content you build on Wix belongs to you", so you can copy out your text and images, and you can move your domain away. If you run Wix Stores, you can also export your product list to a CSV file. What you cannot take is the working site itself.

Can you export a Squarespace site?

Partly. Squarespace lets you "export certain content from your Squarespace site into an .xml file" for import into WordPress (Squarespace, October 2026). It is a partial export, not your whole site.

What comes across is the basic content: your text and image blocks, your layout pages, gallery pages on older version 7.0 sites, and one blog with its posts. That is genuinely useful for a move to WordPress, and it is far from a full copy.

What stays behind is most of what makes the site yours. Squarespace's own list excludes "style settings" and "custom CSS", along with store pages, product blocks, more than one blog, and audio and video blocks. Your design and your shop pages do not export, though your product list can be downloaded separately as a CSV file.

Wix vs Squarespace, side by side

Neither platform hands you a working site to take elsewhere. The difference is only how much content you can salvage on the way out.

Wix Squarespace
Full-site export None at all Partial content only
What you can take Text, images, domain Text, images, one blog, domain
Design and CSS Stays on the platform Not exported
Store or products Product list exports as CSV; the store does not Product list exports as CSV; the store does not
Moving means A full rebuild A partial rebuild

What you can always take with you

Two things are always portable, whichever builder you are on: your domain and your content.

Your domain name is yours to move, covered in how to transfer a domain. Your words and images can be copied out by hand if nothing else.

What rarely travels is the site itself. A hosted builder generates your pages on its own servers, so there is no standalone set of files to hand over. That is why "export" means so little on these platforms.

This is the ownership gap most owners discover too late. In our experience, clients often cannot say whether they own their site or merely rent it, and the answer only surfaces the day they try to leave. The deeper question of who owns your design and code is worth settling before you build, not after.

How to avoid the lock-in

Plan for portability before you commit to a platform, not once you are stuck. The safest habits are simple, and they cost nothing at the start.

Own your domain in your own account, so moving is always possible. Know going in that a Wix or Squarespace site will likely need a rebuild when you move, and budget for it.

If portability matters from the outset, a more open path keeps your options open. A self-hosted stack like WordPress gives you files you fully control. Among hosted builders, Webflow is the rare one that exports its code on paid Workspace plans.

Weighing a builder against a built site is the heart of Wix versus a professional website, and lock-in belongs in that decision.

Frequently asked questions

Can I move my Wix website to WordPress?

Not directly. Wix does not export your site, so there is no file to import into WordPress. You can move your domain and copy your text, images, and blog posts by hand, then rebuild the site on WordPress. The content transfers with effort; the design and structure do not. Treat it as a rebuild, not a migration.

Does Squarespace let me export my whole site?

No, only part of it. Squarespace creates an .xml file with your text, images, layout pages, and one blog, aimed at importing into WordPress. It leaves out your style settings, custom CSS, store pages, product blocks, extra blogs, and audio and video blocks. You get the basic content, not the design or the shop. A full move still means rebuilding.

If I own my content, why can't I export the site?

Because the content and the working site are different things. Wix and Squarespace confirm your words and images are yours, and you can copy them out. The site that displays them is generated by the platform's own software on its servers. There is no standalone copy to hand over, so ownership of the content does not mean ownership of the site.

Can I take my domain name when I leave Wix or Squarespace?

Yes. Your domain is separate from the site built on it, and you can transfer it to another registrar or point it at a new host. This is the one clean part of leaving a builder. Keeping your domain in your own account from the start makes any future move simpler, whatever happens to the site itself.

Which builders let you export your site properly?

Very few hosted builders allow a true export. Wix allows none, and Squarespace allows only a partial content file. Webflow is the notable exception, exporting your HTML, CSS, and JavaScript on paid Workspace plans. Its CMS and store data come out only as separate CSV files, not working features. A self-hosted platform like WordPress avoids the problem, because you already hold the files.

Owning your site, not just renting it

Storming Solutions builds custom-coded websites for Malaysian businesses from Kuala Lumpur, search- and AI-readable from day one, and runs SEO, AEO, and GEO so those sites get found. We build sites you can actually move, and we make sure clients own their domain and know what they can take with them. A site you cannot leave is a site you do not fully own.
