Webflow, Framer, and No-Code Builders: What They Are

Updated 14 October 2026

Jump to section

Webflow, Framer, and similar no-code builders are hosted platforms that let you design and publish a full website visually, without writing code. Webflow calls itself "the agentic web platform" (Webflow, October 2026). Framer calls itself "the design agent for every step from idea to launch" (Framer, October 2026). Unlike a WordPress page builder, these are complete platforms in their own right, folding design, hosting, and content management into one place.

How a no-code builder works

A no-code builder gives you a visual canvas instead of a code editor. You place and style elements by clicking and dragging, and the platform generates the underlying code and hosts the result.

The promise is a real, custom-looking site without a developer writing HTML by hand. The word "no-code" describes the method, not a lesser outcome.

This is where a builder differs from a WordPress page builder like Elementor. A page builder is a plugin that lives inside WordPress. Webflow and Framer are standalone platforms that replace WordPress entirely, hosting and all.

Webflow vs Framer vs WordPress

The three suit different jobs, so the choice is less about which is best and more about which fits. A quick comparison sets the shape.

Webflow Framer WordPress
What it is Hosted visual web platform AI-led design-first builder Self-hosted open software
Hosting Built in Built in You arrange it
Take your code with you Yes, on paid Workspace plans No self-host export Yes, you own the files
Best for Design-heavy marketing sites Fast, design-led sites Content-heavy, owned sites

Webflow leans toward marketing teams who want fine design control, and its homepage cites "300,000+ brands". Framer leans design-first and quick to launch.

WordPress and hand-built sites stay the route when full ownership and portability matter most.

Can you take your site with you?

Portability is the question that separates these builders, and Webflow is the unusual one.

On paid Workspace plans, Webflow lets you "export your site's HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and assets" to host anywhere, "no attribution required" (Webflow, August 2026).

That export has real limits. Webflow's own help page says the CMS, User Accounts, ecommerce content, code components, and localized pages "aren't included in exported code". It adds that forms and site search will not work on an exported site. CMS and store data can be saved separately as CSV files, but what you take is the static design, not the working database behind it.

Framer says it "does not offer HTML export for self-hosting", because its sites rely on platform services such as server-side rendering (Framer, October 2026). A separate Framer page on data portability says you can download the published files and export CMS content as CSV or JSON. Either way, the working site depends on Framer's hosting, so leaving usually means rebuilding.

This is the same lock-in that runs through whether you can export a Wix or Squarespace site, and it is worth checking before you commit.

In our experience, the builder-versus-professional question comes up often, and ownership is the part clients rarely ask about upfront. Who holds your site, and can you move it, matters more the day you outgrow the tool.

Who each builder suits

The right builder depends on how much you value design control, speed, and ownership. No single answer fits every business.

Webflow rewards teams who want precise, custom design and can invest time learning it. Framer suits a fast, design-led launch where the visuals lead.

WordPress and a leaner custom stack stay strongest for content-heavy sites you fully own and want to keep portable. If the appeal is mostly speed, weigh it against what an AI builder can and cannot do first.

Frequently asked questions

Is Webflow better than WordPress?

Neither is better outright; they fit different needs. Webflow gives fine visual design control with hosting built in and a paid code export. WordPress gives full ownership, a vast plugin ecosystem, and files you host yourself. Webflow suits design-led marketing sites, while WordPress suits content-heavy sites you want to control and keep portable. The right pick depends on which matters more to you.

Can you export a website from Webflow or Framer?

Webflow can, on paid Workspace plans, exporting your HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and assets, though the CMS, ecommerce, and forms are left out of the code. CMS and store data come out only as separate CSV files. Framer says it does not offer HTML export for self-hosting, so moving off it usually means rebuilding. This is a real difference: Webflow is unusually portable for a hosted builder, while most no-code platforms lock your site to their hosting. Check export terms before you build.

Is no-code the same as a website builder?

Largely yes, with a nuance. A no-code builder lets you make a site visually without writing code, which is what tools like Webflow, Framer, Wix, and Squarespace all do. "No-code" describes the method. "Website builder" describes the product. A WordPress page builder is a related idea, but it is a plugin inside WordPress rather than a standalone platform.

Do you own a site built on Webflow or Framer?

You own your content and, with Webflow, an export of the static code on paid Workspace plans. You do not own the platform itself, and Framer keeps your site tied to its hosting. Ownership on hosted builders is partial: your words and images are yours, but the working site depends on the vendor. A self-hosted stack is what gives you full control.

Are Webflow and Framer good for SEO?

They can be, because both output clean pages and let you set titles, meta, and structure. Search visibility comes down to your content and setup far more than the builder. The bigger risk is portability, not ranking. If you move off the platform later, a site that cannot be exported has to be rebuilt, which can disrupt the rankings you worked for.

Choosing the platform you will not regret

Storming Solutions builds custom-coded websites for Malaysian businesses from Kuala Lumpur, search- and AI-readable from day one, and runs SEO, AEO, and GEO so those sites get found. We weigh portability and ownership at the start. The cost of a locked-in choice only shows up when you try to leave.
