What Is ChatGPT Search?

ChatGPT search is ChatGPT's ability to search the live web and answer with links to the sources it used, rather than replying only from training data. OpenAI launched it on October 31, 2024, and opened it to everyone without an account on February 5, 2025. The pages it can cite are the ones its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, is allowed to read. ChatGPT search adds a live web layer on top of the chatbot. When a question needs current information, ChatGPT searches the web and writes an answer that links to the pages it drew on.

That is a real shift from plain ChatGPT. Without search, the assistant answers from what its model memorized up to a training cutoff, with no sources and no knowledge of anything newer.

The live-search version works by retrieving pages and writing from them, a method called retrieval-augmented generation. The engine is only ever as good as the pages it can reach.

OAI-SearchBot: the crawler that decides if you can be cited

Whether ChatGPT search can cite you comes down to one bot, OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI's bot documentation says it "is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features."

The same page is blunt about opting out. Sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links."

This is the mistake we see most often here. OAI-SearchBot is not the same as GPTBot, which OpenAI uses only for model training.

Blocking GPTBot limits what future models learn about you; it leaves ChatGPT search free to read and cite you live. Blocking the wrong one of the two is an expensive typo.

The first thing we check on a site that wants AI mentions is its own robots.txt, to see which of these bots it already welcomes or blocks.

Does ChatGPT search still use Bing?

Not anymore, and the assumption is worth dropping. Earlier ChatGPT browsing leaned on Bing's index, but ChatGPT search now runs on OpenAI's own crawler, OAI-SearchBot.

Being indexed by Bing does nothing for it. The Bing index feeds Microsoft Copilot instead, a separate assistant with a separate path.

So appearing in ChatGPT and appearing in Bing are two different tasks, controlled by two different systems. Treat them that way.

You get cited by making sure OAI-SearchBot can reach you, then giving it pages worth quoting. Allow the crawler in robots.txt, and write answer-first pages that state the point near the top on topics you cover well.
