What Is Agentic Commerce (AI Agents That Buy)?
Updated 21 October 2026

Agentic commerce is a model where AI agents find, choose, and pay for products on your behalf, with your confirmation. It runs on open standards such as OpenAI and Stripe's Agentic Commerce Protocol, launched on 29 September 2025, and Google's Agent Payments Protocol. Shopping in ChatGPT is live only in the US so far. For Malaysian businesses it is early, but the groundwork is the same clean, citable product data that AEO already rewards.
What does agentic commerce mean?
Agentic commerce means an AI agent completes a purchase for you, rather than just pointing you to a product. You state what you want, the agent finds it, and it checks out once you confirm.
That is a real shift from how buying has worked online. The old path was search, click, compare, and pay for yourself. The agentic path folds those steps into one instruction to an AI tool.
OpenAI describes the protocol behind it as a standard that lets "AI agents, people, and businesses work together to complete purchases". The agent acts, but you stay in control of the final yes.
This is not the same as a chatbot that recommends something. A recommendation still leaves the buying to you; an agent carries it through to payment.
How does an agent actually pay?
An agent pays through new open protocols that let it check out securely on your behalf. Three efforts, all announced in 2025, are building the rails.
OpenAI and Stripe released the Agentic Commerce Protocol on 29 September 2025, and open-sourced it under the Apache 2.0 license. It powers Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, starting with US Etsy sellers and Shopify merchants such as Glossier and SKIMS to follow. In March 2026, OpenAI said that first version was not flexible enough, let merchants keep their own checkout, and refocused ACP on product discovery.
Google announced its Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) on 17 September 2025. Google calls it an open protocol to "securely initiate and transact agent-led payments across platforms". More than 60 organizations are collaborating on it.
The card networks moved first. Mastercard announced Agent Pay and Visa announced Intelligent Commerce, both in April 2025, adding ways for verified agents to pay under a cardholder's controls.
| Effort | Who | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Agentic Commerce Protocol | OpenAI and Stripe | Open standard behind shopping in ChatGPT, now focused on product discovery |
| Agent Payments Protocol | Google and payment partners | Payment-agnostic rails for agent-led payments |
| Agent Pay and Intelligent Commerce | Mastercard and Visa | Card-network frameworks for agent payments |
The pattern across all of them is the same. The agent gets a controlled, authenticated way to pay, and you keep the final approval.
How does an agent decide what to buy?
An agent picks from the products it can read and trust, much the way an AI answer picks its sources. If a model cannot parse your product, price, and availability, it cannot put your item in the basket.
That makes the buying decision an extension of how engines choose what to cite. Clear pages, structured product data, and a recognizable entity are what let an agent identify and compare your offer.
Reputation feeds in too. What the web says about you, including your reviews, shapes whether an agent shortlists you at all.
The mechanism is worth stating. An agent has to resolve a vague request into one specific product to buy, so the clearer and better-described your listing, the more often you survive that narrowing.
What agentic commerce means for your Malaysian business
For now it is early in Malaysia, so there is no rush to buy into anything. Shopping in ChatGPT is live only in the US, and Google's agent checkout is rolling out from the US to Canada, Australia, and later the UK.
Malaysia has seen pilots, not a channel. Mastercard ran its first agentic payment in Malaysia with CIMB and RHB in March 2026, and Visa began testing with four Malaysian banks in May 2026. Neither is a sales channel a local seller can join yet.
The preparation, though, is work worth doing anyway. Structured product data, clean pages, and a citable reputation are exactly what generative engine optimization already asks for.
In our experience, clients expect fast ranking and underestimate the timeline, and agent-readiness runs on the same slow clock. The groundwork you lay for answer engine optimization today is the same groundwork an agent will read tomorrow.
Treat agentic commerce as a direction, not a deadline. Build the readable foundation now, and you are ready when the checkout reaches this market.
Frequently asked questions
Is agentic commerce live in Malaysia yet?
Not as a channel Malaysian businesses can sell through. Shopping in ChatGPT runs only in the US, and since March 2026 OpenAI has focused it on product discovery, with checkout on merchants' own sites. Mastercard and Visa have run agentic payment pilots with Malaysian banks, but these are tests. Today it is preparation rather than a live sales channel.
Do I need to join a special program to be bought by an agent?
Eventually some programs will need a merchant integration, such as OpenAI and Stripe's Agentic Commerce Protocol. OpenAI takes merchant applications through a waitlist, but with shopping in ChatGPT live only in the US, there is no live channel for a Malaysian business yet. The higher-value move is making your product data clean and readable, since every one of these systems reads structured information before it can transact.
Will AI agents replace my website?
No, they depend on it. An agent needs a clear source of truth for your products, prices, and stock, and that source is your website and its structured data. A stronger, more readable site makes you easier for an agent to find and buy from, not less relevant.
Is agentic commerce the same as an AI chatbot on my site?
No. A chatbot answers questions or suggests products; an agent completes the purchase, including payment, on the buyer's behalf. The two can work together, but agentic commerce is defined by the agent carrying the transaction through, not just advising on it.
How do I get ready for agentic commerce?
Start with the basics that already help you in AI search. Give every product a clear page, add structured data for price and availability, keep your business details consistent, and earn genuine reviews. That readable foundation is what lets any agent, today's or next year's, understand and choose your offer.
Get readable now, sell to agents later
Agentic commerce points to a near future where AI agents buy on a customer's behalf, and the businesses an agent can read clearly are the ones it will choose. The protocols are open, but the shopping surfaces built on them have not launched for Malaysian shoppers yet. So the smart move is to build the clean, structured, well-reviewed foundation that serves your AI visibility today and your agent-readiness tomorrow.
Storming Solutions builds custom-coded websites and runs SEO, AEO, and GEO for Malaysian businesses from Kuala Lumpur. We get product data and pages into the readable shape these new systems reward. We will not sell you a fix for an agent checkout Malaysian shoppers cannot use yet, only the foundation that makes you ready for it.
Want your products readable to AI tools and, in time, to the agents that buy through them? Our SEO, AEO and GEO service builds that foundation, and you can message us on WhatsApp to start.
