What Counts as a Conversion in GA4?

Updated 28 August 2026

Jump to section

A conversion in GA4 is any event you choose to mark as important: a form submission, a WhatsApp click, a phone tap, a purchase. Google Analytics now calls these key events, which its documentation defines as events measuring "an action that's particularly important to the success of your business". Two things follow. Nothing counts as a conversion until you mark it, and page views by themselves never do.

Why does GA4 say "key events" instead of conversions?

Because Google split the word between its two tools. In Google Analytics, the action you care about is a key event. A conversion now formally lives in Google Ads, where it can be created from an Analytics key event and used for bidding.

The same documentation page, as read in August 2026, notes that Google Ads conversions do not appear in standard Analytics reports. That one line explains a lot of confused dashboard comparisons.

For everyday use, nothing changed but the label. Most owners, most agencies, and this article still say conversion; just expect the Analytics interface to say key event where you expect the older word.

What should a Malaysian SME mark as a key event?

The events that represent money. For most Malaysian service businesses those are conversations, not checkouts.

Action on the site What to record Why it counts
Visitor sends the contact form Form submission event A direct lead, with details
Visitor taps the WhatsApp button Click on the WhatsApp link The default Malaysian inquiry channel
Visitor taps your phone number Click-to-call event A live sales conversation
Customer completes a purchase Purchase event Revenue, for stores

This short list is the working heart of GA4, and it is why we treat a call to action and its measurement as one piece of work. An unmeasured button teaches you nothing. The same events give SEO work a finish line: inquiries, not positions.

A pattern we keep meeting: an owner falls for a redesign, launches it, then wonders why it earns no more than the plain site it replaced. Judging a website by looks instead of what it converts is exactly the habit key events exist to break.

What does not count as a conversion?

Traffic. Sessions, page views, time on page, and scroll depth are all real measurements, and none of them is a conversion. None records a visitor doing the thing your business exists for.

Two setup misconceptions produce most bad conversion numbers.

First, automatic is not the same as important. GA4 records many events on its own, but an event appears in no conversion count until someone marks it as a key event.

Second, marking everything defeats the point. When scrolls and video plays count as conversions, the number climbs while its meaning falls. Keep the key events few enough that each one still means money.

How do GA4 conversions connect to Google Ads?

Directly, through key events. You can create a Google Ads conversion from an Analytics key event. Google's stated reason is consistency: the same action, measured the same way in both tools, with less risk of mismatched numbers.

Google Ads' conversion-tracking help frames the choice the same way: you decide what counts as valuable, like a purchase, sign-up, or phone call. The choice matters because paid campaigns optimize toward whatever conversion you feed them.

Feed the system WhatsApp clicks and it hunts for people likely to message you. Feed it nothing and it optimizes toward clicks, the thing you pay for rather than the thing you profit from.

Frequently asked questions

Is a WhatsApp click a real conversion?

Yes, and for most Malaysian SMEs it is the primary one. It records the start of a conversation, which is what the website exists to produce.

It does not record what happens inside the chat, so pair the click data with a simple habit: ask new customers what brought them to you.

Why do Google Ads and GA4 show different conversion numbers?

Because the two tools can count different things, on different rules, and Google Ads conversions do not appear in standard Analytics reports.

The gap narrows when the Ads conversion is created from the same Analytics key event, which is the setup Google recommends for consistency. If your two dashboards disagree wildly, check whether they are actually measuring the same event.

Do I need conversions if I do not run ads?

Yes, arguably more. Without them, traffic is the only number you have, and traffic pays no bills.

Key events are how you tell whether SEO work is producing inquiries rather than visits, and whether AI citations bring actual customers. They cost nothing to set up in a tool that is already free.

Can GA4 track phone calls?

Partly. It records the tap on a click-to-call link, which covers most mobile visitors.

Calls dialed manually from a number someone read on screen, or from a printed card, leave no digital trace. The old-fashioned fix still works: ask callers where they found you.

How many key events should a website have?

A handful. Mark the few actions that represent money, which for a typical service site means a form, a WhatsApp click, and a call tap.

If a report shows dozens of key events, the site is measuring activity, no longer value, and the numbers stop guiding decisions.

Are GA4 conversion numbers exact?

No, so treat them as a reliable trend rather than an exact census. Ad blockers, declined cookie consent, and cross-device switching all shave some recorded events off the true total.

The direction and the month-to-month comparison stay useful, and that is what business decisions actually need from the data.

Count what pays

Storming Solutions builds websites and runs SEO, AEO, and GEO for Malaysian businesses from Kuala Lumpur, and measurement is part of how we work. We would rather show a client which pages produced conversations than which pages collected views, because only one of those numbers argues for a budget.

If your Analytics shows traffic but cannot name last month's inquiries, the gap is a setup problem, and usually a small one. Message us on WhatsApp or reach us through the contact page, and we will check which of your money actions are actually being counted.
