Impressions, Clicks, and CTR Explained

In Google Search Console, an impression counts how often someone saw a link to your site on Google. A click counts how often someone clicked one, and CTR (click-through rate) is clicks divided by impressions. The three sit together in the performance report, and they read best in that order. Impressions show visibility, clicks show traffic, and CTR shows how persuasive your listing is once it appears.

What counts as an impression?

An impression is recorded each time Google shows a link to your site in its results, whether or not anyone acts on it. Google's own help page defines it as how often someone saw a link to your site on Google, across Search, News, and Discover.

Shown is the operative word. An impression means Google surfaced you for a query; it does not mean the searcher read your listing, only that it was served.

Impressions are therefore your visibility number. Rising impressions mean Google is testing your pages against more searches, which is usually the first movement SEO work produces. Zero impressions is a different problem, diagnosed in why a website does not show on Google.

What counts as a click, and what does not?

A click is counted when a searcher clicks a link from Google through to your site. Google's help page keeps the definition that plain, and the counting happens on Google's side, before your website loads at all.

That location matters when numbers disagree. Search Console counts clicks on the results page, while Google Analytics 4 counts sessions after your site loads, so the two never match exactly. Blocked scripts, slow pages, and different counting rules all sit in the gap.

One number they both miss: a searcher who reads your name in the results, remembers it, and visits directly later. Branded visibility pays in ways the click column never shows.

What is CTR, and what is a good one?

CTR is clicks divided by impressions, shown as a percentage. Show up two thousand times, get sixty clicks, and your CTR is three percent (60 ÷ 2,000, illustrative arithmetic, not a benchmark).

Metric What it tells you What usually moves it
Impressions How often Google shows you Rankings, and how many people search the topic
Clicks How much search traffic you earn Position on the page, plus how compelling your title looks
CTR How persuasive your listing is when shown The match between the query, your title, and your snippet

There is no universal good CTR, and we would distrust anyone quoting one. The rate swings with position, query type, and brand recognition: a branded search can convert most of its impressions, while a broad informational query converts few.

Compare a page against its own history, not against a borrowed benchmark.

Why can CTR fall while impressions rise?

A falling CTR beside rising impressions is usually growth, not decay. As a site earns rankings for more queries, the new impressions arrive at lower positions first. Low positions collect few clicks, so the average CTR dilutes even while total clicks climb.

In our experience, owners read this stage as failure because they expected clicks to move first; the timeline disappoints faster than the work does. The month-by-month version of what to expect is mapped in how to tell if SEO is working.

AI answers push the same direction. With an AI summary on the page, US users clicked a standard result on 8% of visits, versus 15% without one (Pew Research Center, March 2025 data). Your link can be seen, and even quoted, without being clicked.

Search Console now separates that layer. Google's generative AI performance report, announced in June 2026, shows impressions inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, but no clicks, CTR, or query data for them yet. How to read that view sits in how to measure AI visibility.

Frequently asked questions

What is average position in Search Console?

Average position is a relative ranking of where your link appears on Google, where one is the topmost spot. It averages across every impression, so a page ranking third for one query and thirtieth for another shows a middling number that matches neither.

Read it per query or per page, and treat big swings as the signal worth investigating rather than the decimal itself.

Why don't my Search Console clicks match GA4 sessions?

Because they count different events in different places. Search Console counts clicks on Google's results page; GA4 counts sessions once your site loads and its tracking runs. Ad blockers, consent choices, slow connections, and redirects all remove visits from one count but not the other. Expect the numbers to tell the same story in trend, never to match exactly.

Do impressions mean people actually saw my page?

No. An impression means Google served your link in the results, not that anyone read it, and not that anyone visited. Treat impressions as a measure of eligibility: Google considered you worth showing. Clicks then measure how often that showing turned into a visit, which is why the pair reads best together.

My impressions dropped suddenly. What happened?

Check three usual causes in order. A ranking change, including a Google update, is the most common. Seasonality is second, since fewer searches mean fewer chances to appear. Third is a technical problem, like pages dropping out of the index.

We've traced drops to sites that had quietly become slow or neglected. Start with why rankings drop.

Can I see impressions for AI Overviews separately?

Yes, partially. Search Console's generative AI report, rolling out from June 2026, separates impressions earned inside AI Overviews and AI Mode from ordinary results. It reports impressions, pages, countries, devices, and dates; clicks, CTR, and query detail are not included yet. For engines outside Google, ChatGPT and friends, there is no equivalent report, which is why manual checks still matter.

Read the report in the right order

Storming Solutions runs SEO, AEO, and GEO for Malaysian businesses from Kuala Lumpur, and these three numbers anchor the reporting we walk clients through. We read impressions before clicks, because visibility moves first and judging month two by its click count misreads healthy progress.
