A website missing from Google is almost always failing at one of two stages: Google has not indexed it, or Google has indexed it but ranks it too low to see. Search Console tells you which within minutes, at no cost. In practice, the cause narrows to one of five, and the fix is different for each.
- It is too new, and Google has not crawled it yet.
- A crawler block is switched on: a robots.txt rule, a noindex tag, or a "coming soon" plugin.
- The pages are not indexable, because content loads only after JavaScript or sits behind a login.
- It is indexed but has no authority, so it ranks on page five where nobody looks.
- It breaks a Google policy and has picked up a manual action.
Google Search Console tells you which one you have, and setup takes about ten minutes. Diagnose there before paying anyone to "fix your SEO".
How do I check whether Google has indexed my site?
Searching Google for site:yourdomain.com shows whether your pages are
indexed at all. If your pages appear, Google already has them, so the problem
is ranking rather than indexing. Skip to the ranking section below.
If nothing appears, open Search Console and paste your homepage URL into the URL Inspection tool. It reports what Google actually sees: "URL is not on Google", plus a stated reason.
The two most common reasons are "Excluded by noindex tag" and "Blocked by robots.txt", and both are usually leftovers from the build phase.
We have watched live Malaysian business sites sit invisible for months over one WordPress checkbox: Settings → Reading, "Discourage search engines from indexing this site". Nobody unticked it at launch.
How do I remove a noindex tag or a crawler block?
Clearing a block takes two steps: remove the block, then ask Google to look again.
- Noindex tag: delete the
<meta name="robots" content="noindex">line from the page's HTML. On WordPress, untick Settings → Reading, "Discourage search engines from indexing this site". Yoast and Rank Math also carry a per-page "noindex" toggle worth checking. - Blocked by robots.txt: open
yourdomain.com/robots.txtand remove theDisallowrule covering the blocked path. A bareDisallow: /blocks the whole site. - Coming-soon or maintenance plugin: deactivate it. Many of these serve Googlebot a placeholder page instead of your real content.
Then reopen URL Inspection, inspect the fixed URL, and click Request Indexing. That queues the page for a recrawl. Google is blunt about the limits: a recrawl request does not guarantee inclusion instantly or even at all, and submitting the same URL repeatedly will not make it faster (Google Search Central, checked July 2026). Re-check the report after a few days rather than resubmitting.
How long does Google take to index a new website?
Google indexes a new site in anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, by its own documentation (Google Search Central, checked July 2026). A brand-new domain with no inbound links sits at the back of that queue.
Two things move it forward. Submit a sitemap in Search Console. Then earn one real link from an already-indexed site, such as a supplier, a directory, or a business association page.
A verified Google Business Profile gives Google another trusted signal that your business is real. After that, new pages on an established site usually index within days.
What if Google has penalized my site?
A manual penalty is rare for ordinary businesses, but Search Console rules it out in two clicks. Open Security & Manual Actions → Manual actions in the left menu. A green check mark means no penalty, which is what most normal sites show.
If an action is listed, usually "unnatural links" after someone bought backlinks or auto-generated spam, the Manual actions report names the violation and the affected pages (Google Search Console Help, checked July 2026).
The way back is slow and honest. Fix every issue on every affected page, not a sample, then click Request Review in the same report. That files a reconsideration request, where you explain what was wrong and what you changed. Google reviews it by hand and replies by email, which can take days to weeks. A rejected request means the cleanup was incomplete, not that you should resubmit the same site.
Check Security issues on the same screen while you are there. A hacked site can vanish from results the same way.
Why is my site indexed but still getting no visitors?
Being indexed only means Google knows your site exists, which is not the same as ranking.
Ranking is a competition. For any commercial keyword in Malaysia, you are up against businesses that have published and earned links for years.
The first thing we check on a site that is indexed but invisible is speed and upkeep, because we have traced more lost visibility to a slow or neglected site than to its content.
Closing that gap is ordinary SEO work: content that answers what customers actually search, pages that pass Core Web Vitals, and authority built steadily. That last part is why meaningful SEO results take about six months, not weeks. Schema markup helps Google understand and display your pages, though it does not buy rankings on its own.
If you need customers before that authority compounds, paid search fills the gap: Google Ads puts you at the top within days, for a price.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if the problem is indexing or ranking?
Run a site:yourdomain.com search on Google. If your pages show up, Google has
indexed you and the problem is ranking, an authority and content issue. If
nothing shows up, the problem is indexing, and the URL Inspection tool in
Search Console names the exact reason. That one search decides which half of
this guide applies to you.
Why did my site disappear from Google after a redesign?
A redesign often re-enables the staging site's noindex tag or "Discourage search engines" setting, which then hides the live site. Developers commonly forget to untick it at launch. Check Settings → Reading in WordPress and the per-page toggle in Yoast or Rank Math, remove any noindex, then request indexing. A redesign can also change URLs, so confirm the old links redirect, or the move can quietly cost you rankings.
Is Google Search Console free?
Yes. Google Search Console is free for any site owner, with no paid tier. You verify that you own the domain, usually through your DNS or hosting provider, and Google then shows how it crawls, indexes, and ranks your pages. It is the same tool professionals use, so the diagnosis costs nothing but the ten minutes of setup.
How much does it cost to get indexed by Google?
Getting indexed by Google costs nothing. Indexing is free, and no legitimate service can pay Google to index or rank you faster. Anyone charging a "Google indexing fee" is selling something Search Console does for free. What does cost money is the SEO work that earns rankings once you are indexed, and our SEO cost guide covers those ranges for Malaysia.
Can I force Google to index my site immediately?
No tool forces immediate indexing. Requesting indexing in Search Console adds your URL to a queue, and Google states that a recrawl request does not guarantee inclusion at all, let alone instantly. Submitting the same URL repeatedly does not speed it up. The reliable levers are a submitted sitemap, real inbound links, and content worth ranking.
Do I need a developer to fix this?
Usually not. Most indexing blocks are self-fixable in minutes, such as unticking a WordPress checkbox or deleting a noindex line. A manual action or a hacked-site warning is where a specialist earns the fee, because the cleanup has to be complete before Google restores you. If the reason Search Console shows you is unclear, that is the point to ask for help.
Start with the reason Search Console gives you
Your next step is one screen. Open Google Search Console, inspect your homepage URL, and read the reason it reports. Every fix in this guide starts from that sentence.
Storming Solutions builds websites and runs SEO/AEO/GEO for Malaysian businesses from Kuala Lumpur, so "why isn't my site on Google?" is a question we answer most weeks. Our honest take: this is one of the few problems in SEO where the fix is usually free.
