What Is a Redirect Chain?

A redirect chain is a sequence of two or more redirects between the address a visitor asks for and the page they finally reach. URL A redirects to URL B, which redirects to URL C. Googlebot will follow up to 10 hops in a chain. Even so, Google advises pointing each old URL straight at its final destination, and keeping any unavoidable chain to three redirects at most. Every extra hop adds delay and can weaken the ranking signals.

How does a redirect chain form?

A redirect chain almost always forms by accident, one change at a time. Each site move adds a layer, and the earlier redirects are left stacked underneath.

A typical history looks like this. First the site moves from HTTP to HTTPS, so http://old redirects to https://old. Later a page is renamed, so https://old redirects to https://new.

Then the business changes domain, so https://new redirects again. Nobody flattened the earlier steps, so a visitor now travels through three hops to load one page.

In our experience, redirect chains are rarely built on purpose. They accumulate across successive redesigns, each migration quietly adding a hop to URLs that were already being redirected.

Why are redirect chains a problem?

A redirect chain costs time and risks signals on every hop. Google states plainly that chaining redirects adds latency for users, and that not all user agents and browsers support long chains (Google Search Central).

Speed is the first cost. Each hop is a separate round trip to the server before the page even starts to load, and mobile visitors on slower connections feel it most.

Discovery is the second. Googlebot follows up to 10 hops, so a very long chain can stop it reaching the final page, which wastes crawl budget and can leave that page missing from Google.

Signal transfer is the third. A 301 redirect passes the old page's ranking signals forward. A long chain gives more chances for a hop to break, loop, or carry the wrong status code along the way.

How many redirects are too many?

One redirect is normal and harmless; the trouble starts when hops stack up. Google's own advice is to redirect to the final destination directly. Where that is not possible, keep the chain to no more than three redirects, and fewer than five.

The point is not a hard cliff at a magic number. Every hop is pure cost with no benefit, so the chain length to aim for is one, or none.

How do you fix a redirect chain?

Fixing a chain means flattening it, so every starting URL points straight at the final page. The redirect from URL A should go directly to URL C, skipping URL B entirely.

Three steps cover most sites.

First, crawl the site with a tool like Screaming Frog, Ahrefs, or Semrush and list every URL that redirects more than once. Second, rewrite each of those redirects to target the final live URL in one hop. Third, update your own internal links and sitemap so they point at the final URL, not at a redirected one.

Flattening chains is redirect work, not canonical or duplicate-content work. A redirect retires the old URL; a canonical keeps two live URLs and names the preferred one. Reach for the redirect when the chain needs collapsing to a single hop.

Do redirect chains hurt SEO?

Long chains can, short ones usually do not. A single redirect passes signals cleanly and adds only a small delay. A chain of four or more slows the page, risks the crawler abandoning it before the end, and gives more points where a hop can fail. Flattening the chain to one hop removes the risk without any downside for your rankings.

How do I find redirect chains on my site?

Run a site crawl with an SEO crawler such as Screaming Frog, Ahrefs, or Semrush, and filter for URLs with more than one redirect in the path. Browser developer tools show the chain for a single URL under the network tab. The pattern to look for is any old URL that redirects to another redirect, rather than landing straight on a live page.

What is a redirect loop?

A redirect loop is a chain that never ends, where URLs redirect back into each other so the final page never loads. The browser gives up and shows a "too many redirects" error, and the crawler cannot index the page at all. A loop is more serious than a long chain, because nobody, human or bot, ever reaches the destination.

Is a redirect chain the same as a redirect loop?

No. A chain reaches the final page eventually, just through unnecessary hops. A loop never reaches it, because the redirects point in a circle. Both are worth fixing, but a loop breaks the page completely while a chain only slows it and weakens the signals passing through.

Does one redirect slow my website down?

Barely. A single redirect adds one extra request, measured in milliseconds, that almost no visitor notices. The concern is the stacking effect when redirects chain together, where each hop adds its own round trip on top of the last. One redirect is fine; four in a row is what starts to show up in load times.

Should I remove old redirects to avoid chains?

Keep the redirects, but flatten them instead of removing them. Deleting a redirect that still has traffic or links sends visitors and crawlers to a dead page. The fix is to repoint each old URL straight at the current live page, so the redirect stays in place but the chain collapses to a single hop.
