What Is a SERP (Search Engine Results Page)?

Updated 8 September 2026

Jump to section

A SERP, or search engine results page, is the page Google shows after you type a query. It is no longer a plain list of ten blue links. A modern SERP stacks organic results, paid ads, featured snippets, a local map pack, and increasingly an AI Overview at the very top. In Malaysia, where Google handles about 92% of all searches (StatCounter, July 2026), the SERP is where nearly all online discovery starts.

"SERP" is an industry term, not one Google defines. What matters to a business owner is what fills it, and how little of that space a single ranking now controls.

What appears on a Google SERP?

A modern SERP is a mix of free and paid blocks, not one ranked column. The pieces that share the page are usually called SERP features:

  • Organic results: the unpaid listings Google ranks by relevance and quality.
  • Ads: paid listings marked "Sponsored", above or below the organic ones.
  • AI Overviews: a generated summary that answers the query and links to several sources.
  • Featured snippets: a single answer lifted from one top-ranking page.
  • Local pack: a map with three nearby businesses, common for "near me" searches.
  • Knowledge panel: a fact box about a business, person, or thing.
  • People Also Ask: an expanding list of related questions.

Not every query shows every feature. A "how to" question may trigger a featured snippet, while "coffee near me" pulls up the local pack instead.

Organic results versus paid results

Organic results are the unpaid listings Google ranks on merit; paid results are ads a business bids to place. The two look similar, but you reach them in completely different ways.

You cannot pay to move up the organic results. That side is earned through SEO, useful content, and technical health. Ads, by contrast, are bought per click and appear the moment your budget goes live.

Organic results Paid results (ads)
How you appear Earned through SEO and quality Bought through Google Ads
What it costs No cost per click Charged per click
How fast Builds over months Live once the budget runs

Both can sit on the same SERP for the same search. A strong strategy usually treats them as separate lanes rather than a choice between one or the other.

The biggest recent change is the AI Overview, a generated answer that now sits above the organic results on a large share of queries. One study of 100,000 keywords found a Google AI Overview on 59.73% of tracked searches as of February 2026, more than double the rate a year earlier (SE Ranking).

That pushes the classic links further down the page. A searcher may read the summary and never scroll, which is why being cited inside the answer now matters as much as ranking first.

The skill that wins this space is the same one that always won: answer the question plainly, high on the page. That is the core of answer engine optimization, and it decides which sources an engine quotes.

Frequently asked questions

What does SERP stand for?

SERP stands for search engine results page. It is the page you see after entering a query into Google, Bing, or any search engine. The term covers the whole page, including organic listings, ads, and every feature such as the local pack or an AI Overview.

Is the SERP the same for everyone?

No. Google personalizes results by location, language, device, and search history, so two people searching the same words can see different pages. Location matters most for local queries: a search for a plumber in Kuala Lumpur returns different businesses than the same search in Penang. This is why checking your own ranking is best done in a neutral, logged-out window.

What are SERP features?

SERP features are the blocks on a results page beyond the standard organic links. They include featured snippets, AI Overviews, the local pack, rich results driven by structured data, image and video packs, and People Also Ask. Each one takes space and attention away from the plain blue links, so appearing in a relevant feature can matter more than a high organic position.

Can you pay to rank higher in the organic results?

No. Organic rankings cannot be bought; they are decided by Google's ranking systems. What you can buy is an ad, which is clearly labelled "Sponsored" and charged per click. Any provider promising to pay Google for a top organic spot is describing something that does not exist.

How do I see what my SERP looks like in Malaysia?

Search your target query in a private or incognito window, with your location set to Malaysia, to see a result close to what a local customer gets. For your own site specifically, Search Console shows the queries you already appear for and your average position. Both give a truer picture than a normal logged-in search, which is shaped by your own history.

Reading your own results page

Storming Solutions runs SEO, AEO, and GEO for Malaysian businesses from Kuala Lumpur. A pattern we see is owners still picturing results as ten blue links, and treating page one like a prize you buy once. We treat the SERP as the real battleground, not a single ranking number. A page ranked first, but buried under features and an AI Overview, is not the win it used to be.
