What Is Schema Markup?

Updated 14 August 2026

Jump to section

Schema markup is code, usually written as JSON-LD, that you add to a page to label what its content means. It uses schema.org, a vocabulary the major search engines agree on. Instead of leaving Google to guess that a page is a product or a local business, you state it directly: the price, the hours, the rating. Google recommends JSON-LD as the easiest format to add and maintain (Google Search Central, accessed August 2026).

How does schema markup work?

Schema markup works by adding labeled data that a machine reads even though a visitor never sees it. A block of JSON-LD sits in the page code and names the facts.

For a Kuala Lumpur cafe, that might be the business name, address, opening hours, and price range. Google reads those labels, matches them to schema.org, and can then treat the page as a known entity rather than plain text.

This is the same clarity that helps AI answer engines quote a business correctly, which connects to how AI engines choose what to cite and to generative engine optimization more broadly.

The markup usually sits in a <script type="application/ld+json"> block in the page's <head>. An illustrative LocalBusiness example looks like this:

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "LocalBusiness",
  "name": "Example Cafe, Kuala Lumpur",
  "address": {
    "@type": "PostalAddress",
    "addressLocality": "Kuala Lumpur",
    "addressCountry": "MY"
  },
  "telephone": "+60-3-0000-0000",
  "openingHours": "Mo-Sa 09:00-18:00",
  "priceRange": "RM"
}

The values here are placeholders, so a real page would carry the actual name, phone, and hours a visitor can see on the page.

Does schema markup help SEO?

Schema markup helps SEO indirectly, not as a ranking factor on its own. Google is clear in the same structured-data documentation that it does not directly raise rankings; its job is to make a page eligible for rich results and easier to understand.

Rich results are the enhanced listings that stand out in search, such as star ratings or product prices shown under the link. They can raise how often people click your result, which is a real gain even when the position is unchanged.

The important caveat is honesty. Google requires structured data to match content the visitor can actually see, and marking up information that is not on the page violates its policies (Google Search Central, accessed August 2026).

That white-hat discipline is the same one behind answer engine optimization. Accurate markup earns trust from both Google and AI engines, and it supports the same consistent business details that local ranking depends on; deceptive markup risks the whole page.

What types of schema should a business use?

The useful types for most Malaysian businesses are LocalBusiness, Product, Review, Article, and Breadcrumb. Choose each to match what the page actually is.

Page type Schema to use
Business or contact page LocalBusiness
Product page Product, Review
Guide or blog post Article
Any page in a section Breadcrumb

A service business gains most from LocalBusiness schema carrying accurate name, address, and phone details. That reinforces the same NAP consistency that supports local ranking.

A shop gains from Product and Review markup, and a guide fits Article schema. The first thing we check on a local site is whether the LocalBusiness details in the code still match the contact details on the page. They drift apart the moment a business moves or changes a number, and stale markup can even feed into why a business is hard to find on Google.

The rule is simple: mark up only what genuinely exists on the page, and keep it accurate.

What happened to question rich results?

Google discontinued FAQ rich results in Search from 7 May 2026 (Google Search Central, accessed August 2026). That markup no longer produces the expandable question boxes it once did. The schema type still exists, but it no longer earns the feature.

Schema value now sits in types that still render, such as LocalBusiness, Product, Review, and Article. This is why chasing a single "SEO trick" schema type ages badly. The durable gain is accurate structured data that describes your real content, whatever features come and go.

Frequently asked questions

Is schema markup a ranking factor?

No. Google states that structured data does not directly raise rankings. Its value is making a page eligible for rich results and easier for search engines and AI systems to read. The indirect benefit is real, though: a richer listing can earn more clicks at the same position, and clearer machine-readable content is easier to cite.

Do I need schema markup if I have a small business website?

Not strictly, but LocalBusiness schema is worth adding for almost any Malaysian business with an address or service area. It gives Google accurate contact details and supports how you appear in local results. If you only add one type, make it LocalBusiness with correct name, address, and phone, matching what visitors see.

What format should schema markup be in?

JSON-LD, in almost every case. Google recommends it as the easiest format to add and maintain, because it sits in a single script block rather than being woven through your visible HTML. Older formats like Microdata still work, but JSON-LD is simpler to manage and less prone to breaking when the page design changes.

Can wrong schema markup hurt my site?

Yes. Marking up content that is not visible on the page, or misrepresenting it, violates Google's structured-data policies and can lead to a manual action against the site. Inaccurate markup also misleads AI engines that read it. The safe rule is to describe only what genuinely appears on the page and keep every detail current.

How do I check my schema markup is working?

Use Google's Rich Results Test, which reads a page or a code snippet and reports which structured-data types it detects and any errors. Validate before relying on any markup, and re-check after a redesign, since template changes often strip or break the code. Treat it as a routine check, not a one-time setup.
