What Do Shopee and Lazada Fees Actually Total?
Updated 7 October 2026
Jump to section
Shopee and Lazada sellers in Malaysia pay roughly 15% to 25% of each sale. That figure combines category commission, the transaction or payment fee, and the 8% service tax on commission. Both platforms revised commissions on 14 August 2026, with Lazada raising rates across every cluster. Shopee also charges a flat RM0.54 per order. The exact figure depends on your product category, so treat any single percentage as a starting estimate, not your real payout.
What Shopee actually charges
Shopee stacks several fees on each order, not one commission. A typical local seller pays a category commission, a transaction fee, a flat per-order charge, and fees for any optional programs they join.
The category commission is the largest slice, and it varies by product cluster. Since 14 August 2026 it runs from about 11% to 17% before SST. Joining the Shopee Cashback Programme brings it to about 7.5% to 15%, per the Seller Education Hub fee overview (dated 31 July 2026). Some groceries and household items sit lower still.
On top sits a transaction fee of 3.78% (after SST) on what the buyer pays, shipping included. Shopee also charges a Platform Support Fee of RM0.54 per completed order, which is RM0.50 plus 8% SST. Combined, a standard local seller pays roughly 16% to 22% of the order value, plus that RM0.54.
Commission carries 8% SST. New sellers pay no commission until their first listing is more than 120 days old or they pass 200 completed orders. Whichever comes first ends the waiver, a rule in force since 1 August 2026.
What Lazada actually charges
Lazada charges commission by product cluster, split into a Marketplace Commission and, for LazMall stores, a LazMall Commission. Its structure is simpler than Shopee's stack, but the headline rate is high.
Lazada's top commission reached as much as 22.5% from 1 November 2025, reported by The Star (3 November 2025). A further adjustment on 14 August 2026 raised rates across every cluster. They now reach 22.5% for physical goods and 25.5% for digital goods, as BigSeller's August 2026 rate tables show. LazMall stores pay more. The rate you actually pay depends on your category.
The adjustment added no new fee, and Lazada's existing payment fee still applies. Commission carries 8% SST, and it is calculated on the item price after your own seller-funded discounts, not after Lazada-funded promotions.
The two side by side
The fees are shaped differently, so the table lines up the components rather than a single number.
| Fee component | Shopee MY | Lazada MY |
|---|---|---|
| Category commission | About 11% to 17% (lower in the Cashback Programme) | By cluster; about 15% to 22.5%, up to 25.5% for digital goods |
| Program fees | Optional programs, if you join them | Bundled into commission |
| Transaction fee | 3.78% (after SST) | Existing payment fee still applies |
| Flat per order | RM0.54 Platform Support Fee | None stated |
| Tax | 8% SST on commission and fees | 8% SST on commission |
| Realistic all-in | About 16% to 22% of order + RM0.54 | Up to about 24% of order after SST, plus the payment fee |
Source: Shopee MY Seller Education Hub (article 3503, dated 31 July 2026), The Star (3 November 2025), and BigSeller (12 August 2026). Lazada's top rate reached 22.5% from 1 November 2025 and rose again on 14 August 2026, when Shopee also revised its commission table. Figures are ranges, since the real rate depends on your product category and any programs you join.
A worked example
Sell a RM100 item on Shopee at a combined 20% take rate (illustrative arithmetic, not your exact rate). The platform keeps about RM20, plus RM0.54, leaving you around RM79.46 before your own product cost.
On a RM100 Lazada sale in a 22.5% category, commission takes RM22.50 plus RM1.80 SST, leaving about RM75.70 before the payment fee and your product cost.
Now stretch that across a month of RM20,000 in sales. A 20% take is RM4,000 gone to the platform, about RM48,000 a year.
That yearly figure is the number worth holding onto. It is often enough to fund a website that pays for itself within a year or two.
What this means for your margin
The marketplace take is a running cost on every sale, not a one-time fee like a website's build cost, and it compounds as you grow. Sellers often underestimate how much the platform keeps until they reconcile an actual payout.
That is the case for owning a store alongside the marketplace, not instead of it. Your own site charges only a payment-gateway fee per sale, usually a few percent, rather than a fifth of the order. A store has running costs of its own, which is why we show clients the compulsory, optional, and potential costs upfront before any build.
The trade is real traffic. Shopee and Lazada hand you buyers on day one, while your own site earns them over time, a balance covered in selling on your website versus a marketplace and in TikTok Shop versus your own store. Whether you even need a full store is worth checking first in e-commerce or a catalog.
Most Malaysian sellers should run both and migrate their best customers home, a move planned in moving from Shopee and Lazada to your own store.
Frequently asked questions
How much do Shopee and Lazada take per sale in Malaysia?
Roughly 15% to 25% of each sale, once commission, transaction or payment fees, and 8% SST are combined. Shopee lands around 16% to 22% plus a flat RM0.54 per order, while Lazada's commission reaches 22.5% for physical goods before SST and its payment fee. Both platforms revised rates on 14 August 2026, and Lazada's ceiling had already reached 22.5% from 1 November 2025. The exact rate depends on your product category, so check your own settlement report rather than trusting one headline number.
Are Shopee and Lazada seller fees the same for every product?
No. Both platforms set commission by product category or cluster, so two shops selling different things pay very different rates. Electronics, fashion, and groceries each carry their own percentage, and campaign or program fees add more on top. Always check your specific categories in the Seller Center, and treat any blog figure as an estimate until you confirm it against your own account.
Do marketplace fees include SST?
Yes. Commission and service fees on both Shopee and Lazada carry 8% service tax, which is part of why the all-in take is higher than the headline commission alone. The tax applies to the platform's fees, not to your product itself. Factor the full fee-plus-SST figure into your pricing, or the tax quietly eats into a margin you thought you had.
Is it lower-cost to sell on my own website?
Per sale, yes, though a website costs money to build first. Your own store charges only a payment-gateway fee, usually a few percent, instead of a fifth of each order. The catch is traffic: a marketplace brings buyers instantly, while a site earns them over months. Most sellers run both, using the marketplace for reach and the site to keep the margin on repeat customers.
When does building my own store pay off?
When a few months of marketplace commission would cover a build. If you pay RM4,000 a month in platform fees, a store that costs a few thousand ringgit pays for itself quickly on the sales you move over to it. Below that, the marketplace math still favors staying put. The trigger is your monthly fee bill, not a fixed sales target.
