TikTok Shop vs Your Own Store: Which Should You Sell On?
Updated 31 August 2026
Jump to section
Most Malaysian sellers should do both, but own a website as the anchor. TikTok Shop puts your products in front of impulse buyers inside a video feed and handles the checkout. But it charges a commission on every order, sets its own rules, and owns the customer relationship. Your own store, from around RM4,999 to build, keeps the full margin, the customer data, and the brand. Use TikTok Shop for reach, then bring those buyers home.
The two side by side
The split comes down to who owns the customer and who takes a cut of each sale. The table puts the two options next to each other.
| What decides it | TikTok Shop | Your own store |
|---|---|---|
| Cost to start | Free to open; commission per order | From ~RM4,999 one-time to build |
| Cost per sale | Category commission plus fees, always | Only your payment-gateway fee |
| Who owns the customer | The platform does | You do |
| Traffic | Built in from the video feed | You build it with SEO and content |
| Buyer trust | Borrowed from TikTok | Earned on your own name |
| Control and risk | Platform sets rules, can suspend you | Yours, if you own the accounts |
| Best for | Impulse buys and viral reach | Brand, margin, repeat customers |
Source: TikTok Shop's commission is set per product category and seller program. The rate card is effective 13 September 2025 and inclusive of SST (TikTok Shop Seller Center Malaysia, retrieved August 2026). The RM4,999 build figure is Storming Solutions' own published starting rate.
What does each really cost?
The costs are shaped in opposite ways. TikTok Shop is free to open, so it feels like the safe option, but it takes a commission on every single order.
That commission is not one flat number. It is set per product category and seller program, so two shops can pay very different rates, and the rate card can change.
Say TikTok Shop takes a combined 10% on a store selling RM20,000 a month (an illustrative rate, not a universal figure, since the real rate depends on your category). That is RM2,000 a month, about RM24,000 a year handed to the platform.
A website is the reverse: a real cost up front, from around RM4,999 for a professional build, plus hosting and maintenance. After that, no platform takes a slice of each sale beyond your payment-gateway fee.
Here is the crossover. At low volume TikTok Shop is far less costly, and past a certain monthly sales figure the arithmetic flips. When a few months of commission would cover a build, the store starts paying for itself.
The full build breakdown sits in how much a website costs in Malaysia.
Who owns the customer and the data?
TikTok Shop owns the customer, and this is the part sellers underestimate. When someone buys through your TikTok Shop, the platform holds the relationship, and you often cannot reach that buyer directly afterward.
That has a cost. To sell to the same person again, you usually pay the platform once more through its own ads, because you never held the contact.
On your own website you own the order data, the email list, and the relationship, which lets you sell again at no new acquisition cost. We've seen businesses locked out of their own site because a former vendor held the domain and hosting. Depending on a store you cannot fully control is a milder version of the same risk.
Owning your website as the anchor is what keeps that power on your side.
When is TikTok Shop first the right call?
TikTok Shop first is the right call when reach and speed matter more than margin. If you sell impulse or visual products, or are testing whether something sells, TikTok Shop puts you in front of a scrolling audience this week. It costs nothing upfront.
That is a genuinely smart first move. Use it to prove demand and generate cash, then build the store once the numbers justify it.
When you reach that step, the choice between a builder and a custom site is covered in Wix versus a professional website.
Where our verdict is wrong
Our verdict is wrong when your whole business is low-margin impulse resale to viewers who only ever buy in the feed. If there is no brand to build and no repeat custom to keep, a standalone store may never earn back its cost.
In that case, TikTok Shop on its own can be the honest answer. The "own a site" recommendation assumes you have margin, a brand, or repeat customers worth holding onto.
If you have no build budget yet at all, start on TikTok Shop and add the site later. The point is the sequence, not skipping the store forever.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to choose between TikTok Shop and my own website?
No. For most Malaysian sellers the strongest position is both. TikTok Shop drives discovery and impulse sales; your own site is the home base that keeps the margin and the relationship. They do different jobs. The mistake is treating a TikTok Shop as your entire online presence, because then the platform owns your whole customer base and sets every rule.
How much commission does TikTok Shop take in Malaysia?
It varies. TikTok Shop sets commission per product category and seller program, under a rate card effective 13 September 2025. It is inclusive of SST, and no single headline percentage fits every shop. Check your own categories in the Seller Center rate card for the current figures. Budget for a per-order commission, and treat any number you read on a blog as an estimate, not your rate.
Can TikTok Shop suspend my store?
Yes. A platform sets its own rules and can restrict, penalize, or suspend a shop over policy breaches, disputes, or reasons that are hard to appeal. Your listings and even your storefront can change on the platform's decision. A website you own cannot be taken from you the same way, as long as the domain and hosting are registered in your name.
Will my own store get TikTok-level traffic?
Not at first. TikTok Shop hands you a built-in, scrolling audience on day one; a website's traffic is something you build with a proper build, SEO, and content over months. That is the trade. TikTok rents you reach now, while the website earns you an audience you keep. Most sellers run both, so the store grows while TikTok Shop drives early sales.
Should a brand-new seller start on TikTok Shop?
Often, yes. With no budget for a build and a product to test, TikTok Shop gets you selling this week with borrowed reach and trust. Treat it as a testing and cash-flow stage. The moment sales are steady, add the website so you stop renting your entire customer base and start owning part of it.
