What Is E-E-A-T?

Updated 11 August 2026

Jump to section

E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. It is the framework in Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines, describing what separates genuinely helpful pages from ones that only look helpful. Google added Experience to the older E-A-T in December 2022, making it E-E-A-T. It is not a score the algorithm assigns, but a description of what Google's systems try to reward.

What does each part of E-E-A-T mean?

Each letter is a different kind of evidence that your content deserves to be believed. Experience is first-hand involvement: having actually used the product or run the service you write about.

Expertise is the knowledge and skill behind the content. Authoritativeness is how far others in your field recognize you as a go-to source.

Trustworthiness is whether the page, author, and site can be relied on, covering accuracy, honesty, and safety. Google names Trust the most important of the four, because the other three feed into whether a page can be trusted.

Letter What it means How to show it
Experience First-hand involvement Project photos, real cases
Expertise Knowledge and skill Named authors, credentials
Authoritativeness Recognition by others Reviews, mentions, references
Trustworthiness Reliability and accuracy Verifiable identity, sourced claims

For a local service business, the fastest wins are usually Experience and Trust. Show the real work you have done, and make your identity and claims verifiable.

Is E-E-A-T a Google ranking factor?

No, there is no E-E-A-T score inside Google's ranking systems. Google stated this directly in the same December 2022 announcement: the guidelines train human raters, and they are not a live algorithm dial.

What the systems do reward are measurable signals that line up with the framework. Clear authorship, accurate information, a real business identity, and content showing first-hand knowledge all count.

Since no score exists to game, the honest route is to earn those signals. This is the same discipline that decides which sources AI engines cite, because answer engines also lean toward sources that read as experienced and trustworthy. It is also why the shift to AI-assisted search rewards the same groundwork rather than a new trick.

How do you show E-E-A-T on your website?

You show E-E-A-T by making your experience and identity impossible to miss. Put a real author or company name on your content, with a short bio stating the relevant background.

Show proof of first-hand work: project photos, case details, or specific results you can stand behind. Keep your business name, address, and contact details consistent everywhere, because a verifiable identity is a trust signal, and part of ordinary local SEO.

Cite real sources for any figure you publish. None of this guarantees a ranking, but it is the groundwork that lets Google, ChatGPT, and Gemini treat your site as a credible answer.

In our experience, owners want a switch to flip for trust. The signals only work when they are genuinely true, which is slower but far more durable.

Frequently asked questions

Is E-E-A-T a ranking factor?

Not directly. There is no E-E-A-T score in Google's algorithm; the term describes what human quality raters look for. Google's systems reward related signals instead, like clear authorship, accurate content, and a real identity. So you cannot switch E-E-A-T on, but you can make the underlying signals genuinely true and let them show.

What does the extra E in E-E-A-T stand for?

Experience. Google added it to the older E-A-T in December 2022 to reward first-hand involvement, like having actually used a product or run a service. It sits alongside Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. For many small businesses Experience is the most winnable, because you genuinely do the work competitors only write about.

Which part of E-E-A-T matters most?

Trust. Google's own guidelines call Trustworthiness the most important of the four, because Experience, Expertise, and Authoritativeness all feed into whether a page can be relied on. A page can look expert and still fail on trust if its claims are inaccurate or its owner is hidden. Make your identity, accuracy, and honesty verifiable first.

Does E-E-A-T matter for AI search too?

Yes. Answer engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity favor sources that read as experienced and trustworthy, for the same reasons Google does. The signals overlap: clear authorship, first-hand detail, and accurate, well-sourced claims. Building genuine E-E-A-T is part of answer-engine optimization and generative-engine optimization, not a separate task.

How do I prove experience on my site?

Show the work, not just claims about it. Add project photos, specific case details, named authors with real backgrounds, and results you can stand behind. Keep your business name and contact details consistent across the web, since a verifiable identity supports trust. Generic, anonymous content is exactly what first-hand experience is meant to beat.
