Will AI Search Replace Google?
Updated 1 August 2026
Jump to section
AI search will not replace Google anytime soon, because Google absorbed the technology first. Google still handles about 93% of Malaysian searches (StatCounter, June 2026), and its own AI Overviews passed 2.5 billion monthly users (Sundar Pichai, May 2026). ChatGPT is real competition, not a replacement. The contest that matters for your business is whose pages those AI answers quote, and that part you can influence.
How Google absorbed AI search
Google folded the AI answer into its own results page instead of losing users to one. AI Overviews sit on top of ordinary Google searches, generated by Google, above Google's own links. By February 2026 an AI Overview appeared on 59.73% of tracked searches (SE Ranking, February 2026).
The scenario people imagine, everyone abandoning Google for a chatbot, skips that step. The most-used AI answer engine in the world is the one built into the search page Malaysians already use.
What the numbers actually say
The scale gap tells the story better than predictions do:
| Measure | Figure | Source, date |
|---|---|---|
| Google share of Malaysian search | about 93% | StatCounter, June 2026 |
| AI Overviews monthly users | 2.5 billion | Google (Sundar Pichai), May 2026 |
| ChatGPT monthly active users | 1 billion | Sensor Tower estimate, May 2026 |
| Tracked searches showing an AI Overview | 59.73% | SE Ranking, February 2026 |

ChatGPT's billion users are real, and worth taking seriously. They sit alongside Google's dominance of Malaysian search, not in place of it. People add an AI tool; they rarely delete the search habit.
The real change is the disappearing click
What is changing is the click, not the company. When an AI summary appears, users click a standard result on 8% of visits, versus 15% without one (Pew Research Center, March 2025 data, US panel). The answer gets delivered on the results page, and the visit never happens.
That moves the prize. When fewer searches end in a click, being the source the answer quotes becomes the scarce asset, and the ranking alone stops being the finish line. Which pages get quoted follows the signals in how AI engines choose their citations.
So is SEO dead?
No. Answer engines overwhelmingly draw on pages that already rank. The crawlable structure, content quality, and authority that classic SEO builds are the entry ticket to being quoted at all.
What has changed is the finishing work on top: AEO makes each page quotable, and GEO makes the brand one that AI tools name. A pattern we've noticed: clients arrive assuming SEO, AEO, and GEO are three separate platforms to buy. In practice the same page, structured once, does all three jobs. Our three-way comparison of the disciplines covers where each earns its keep.
What should a Malaysian business do now?
Build for both readers at once, starting with the pages you already have:
- Keep ranking on Google, because that is still where about 93% of Malaysian searches happen.
- Rewrite key pages so the first paragraph answers the question the page exists for.
- Keep your business details identical everywhere, so engines trust who you are.
- Let AI crawlers read your site, and check an older site's AI-readiness before assuming it qualifies.
None of that is wasted if the balance between Google and chat tools shifts again. Every item serves whichever engine wins.
Frequently asked questions
Will ChatGPT overtake Google in Malaysia?
Unlikely in the next few years. Google holds about 93% of Malaysian search and serves its own AI answers to that audience. A challenger must replace a habit, not just offer a feature. ChatGPT keeps growing and deserves a place in your visibility plan, as a second audience rather than a successor.
Should I stop investing in SEO?
No. The pages AI engines quote are overwhelmingly pages that already rank. Abandoning SEO removes you from both games at once. The smarter move is extending the same work: keep the rankings, then structure pages so an engine can lift your answer directly. That extension is AEO, not a new budget line.
Does Google-Extended control whether I appear in AI Overviews?
No. Google-Extended is a control for Gemini training and grounding, and Google states it does not affect inclusion in Search or act as a ranking signal. AI Overviews are part of Google Search, so your normal indexing and snippet settings govern them.
Which AI tools should I actually watch?
Watch the ones your customers can reach without effort: Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity. Each month, ask each tool your own customers' questions. Note whether your business is named or cited. That simple log tells you more about your AI visibility than any industry prediction will.
How do I become the source AI answers quote?
Structure your pages so the answer is liftable. That means the direct answer in the first paragraph, headings that match real questions, facts in plain HTML, and crawlers allowed in. That page-level work is answer engine optimization, and it runs on the same foundation as your rankings.
When will the AI search shift settle down?
Not soon, and waiting for a settled landscape is the one clear mistake. The tools, interfaces, and market shares will keep moving for years. Answer-first pages, consistent business details, and open crawlers have stayed valuable through every shift so far, which is why they are the work worth doing now.
