SEO, AEO, and GEO are three ways to stay visible as search shifts from links to answers. SEO helps people find your website in Google. AEO helps your content become part of the answers that AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude give. GEO helps those tools name your business when someone asks who to hire. The three overlap, and most businesses start with SEO.
You do not pick just one of them. They are closely connected parts of the same work, aimed at three different finish lines.
Put simply: SEO helps people find you, AEO helps your content become part of the answer, and GEO helps AI recommend you.
For most businesses, a solid SEO foundation comes first, because the other two build on it. But the three overlap and can be worked on together, and your best starting point depends on how established your website and brand already are. Treat SEO first as a sensible default, not a fixed rule.
The three at a glance
Here is how the three compare on what they aim for, what a win looks like, and what usually needs to be in place first.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it means | Search Engine Optimization | Answer Engine Optimization | Generative Engine Optimization |
| Main goal | Help people find your website in Google | Help your content become part of an AI tool's answer | Help AI name or recommend your business |
| A question it wins | "seo agency in KL" | "what does SEO cost in Malaysia?" | "who should I hire for SEO in KL?" |
| Where the work happens | Your website | Your website | Your site, plus directories, reviews, profiles |
| What success looks like | A higher spot in Google results | Your page quoted in an AI answer | Your business named or recommended |
| Usually built | First | After basic SEO is in place | After your site and content are established |
| First results show in | Weeks to about 3 months | Weeks, once a page is re-read | About 6 to 12 months |

What actually differs between the three?
SEO, AEO, and GEO differ by what they aim for, not by which tools you use.
SEO earns your page a spot in Google's list of links. The work is a fast website Google can read easily, useful and relevant content, and signs that other websites trust you.
AEO, or answer engine optimization, takes a page that already ranks and makes it easy for an AI tool to quote. The page opens with a direct answer in its first few lines, so the tool can lift it cleanly. Facts sit in clear sentences and simple tables, and schema markup tells the tool what the page is about.
GEO, or generative engine optimization, works one level up, on your business itself. It runs on consistent business details across every directory, plus reviews and mentions on other websites, so AI tools have a clear, steady picture of who you are.
There is a reason SEO usually comes first. When an AI tool answers a question, it reads one passage at a time and picks the clearest one (how engines choose what to quote). A page that gives its answer early gets used; a better page that hides its answer far down often never gets read that far.
Getting recommended works differently again. An AI tool builds a picture of your business from many separate sources, which is why consistent details across directories move GEO more than any single page can. The deeper mechanics live in the AEO guide and the GEO guide.
Can one AI do both AEO and GEO in the same answer?
Yes. One assistant can do both in a single answer, because AEO and GEO describe the task, not the platform. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity can all quote a page as a source (AEO) and recommend a business (GEO) in the same reply.
| When the AI... | You are working on... |
|---|---|
| Explains a topic using your page as a source | AEO |
| Names or recommends your business | GEO |
Picture a Malaysian buyer asking Claude one question:
"What makes a website load faster, and which web design agencies in Kuala Lumpur should I consider?"
Claude may first explain what makes a website load faster and quote your guide as its source. That is AEO, because your content was used to answer the question.
Claude may then list a few agencies to consider, with your business among them. That is GEO, because your brand was chosen as an option.
Both happen in one chat, on one platform, doing two different jobs. The example is there to show the idea, not to promise any specific AI output.
GEO is broader than a recommendation, too. An AI tool might simply describe your business, for example as a Kuala Lumpur SEO agency focused on technical work. That plain mention counts as GEO too, earned by your presence across the web.
Which should a Malaysian business build first?
Most Malaysian businesses should start with SEO, because the other two build on it. An AI tool cannot quote a page it cannot find, and it will not recommend a brand whose own website says nothing worth quoting.
A pattern we see often is business owners treating the three as separate platforms that each need their own sign-up. In practice they are one body of work with three finish lines.
Once your site can be found and starts to rank, AEO is usually the highest-return next move. It reuses the same pages and makes them easy to quote, which is why AEO and modern SEO overlap so much.
GEO tends to come last, because it is the slowest and it depends on the other two being real first. None of this is a rigid sequence, though. A business that already ranks well may get more value from working on reviews and mentions than from rewriting pages that already do their job.
How fast does each one show results?
SEO and AEO can move in weeks to a few months. GEO usually takes about 6 to 12 months.
SEO runs the familiar course: technical fixes in month one, first ranking movement around month three, and meaningful traffic from month six.
AEO can move faster on specific, low-competition questions. An answer engine only needs to re-read one improved page to start quoting it.
GEO builds the way brand reputation always has, slowly, through steady signals across many websites. That puts it on the same 6-to-12-month horizon as ordinary SEO. A business that chases GEO first waits the longest for the least certain result.
What does it cost in Malaysia to do all three?
None of the three carries its own price tag with most Malaysian agencies, ours included. All three come out of the same SEO and content retainer.
Our SEO in Malaysia guide (updated July 2026) puts the market at RM800 to RM10,000+ a month by tier, with RM1,500 to RM3,500 typical for a small or mid-sized business. What changes between SEO, AEO, and GEO is where the hours go, not the invoice.
Early months lean toward SEO and page work, because that produces results fastest. The directory-and-mention work behind GEO earns its keep only once your top pages are already worth quoting.
When should you not start with SEO?
The SEO-first default flips in two situations, and mainly these two.
First: a site already ranks and already gets quoted by AI, but is never named in "who should I hire" questions. Then the gap is a GEO one. Fix the business details that should match across directories, and build reviews and mentions, rather than rewriting pages that already work.
Second: a brand entering a category with almost no competing content can sometimes win mentions early, because an AI tool has little else to name.
Outside those cases, SEO first, then AEO, then GEO stays the sensible order. A provider who sells you GEO before your pages rank has it backward.
Why won't my current website get quoted by AI?
Your current website probably will not get quoted because it was built before answer engines existed. Making a page easy to quote is rarely a quick edit.
Most Malaysian SME sites share the same older problems. They bury the answer below big hero images. They carry no schema markup. And some keep their main text inside JavaScript.
Google renders JavaScript and reads that text without trouble, so this rarely hurts your Google ranking. The catch is that some AI answer engines read the plain HTML and do not run scripts. Text that only appears after JavaScript loads can be missed by them.
Turning those pages into quotable ones usually means rebuilding them answer-first, not switching on a plugin. That rebuild also fixes the SEO and speed problems underneath, so the same work pays off three ways at once.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO just a new name for SEO?
No. AEO is a layer on top of SEO, not a rename of it. SEO decides whether Google ranks your page. AEO decides whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews can pull a clean answer from it. The two share most of the same work: pages Google can find, fast loading, and real content. The difference is the goal, a ranked position or a quoted answer.
Is AEO for Google AI Overviews, and GEO for ChatGPT?
No. AEO and GEO describe what you are working on, not which AI product you target. Every major tool does both. Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity can all answer with quoted sources (AEO), and they can all recommend businesses when someone asks who to hire (GEO). The real test is whether the tool uses your content to answer, or names your brand as the option.
Do I need to pay separately for AEO and GEO?
Usually not. Most Malaysian agencies, ours included, deliver all three inside one SEO and content retainer, not as separate line items. The SEO in Malaysia guide puts a typical retainer for a small or mid-sized business at RM1,500 to RM3,500 a month. Answer-first writing and brand-consistency work come out of those same hours. Treat a quote that charges "AEO" as a standalone premium product with caution.
Can a brand-new website win GEO mentions first?
Sometimes, but rarely, and never as a plan. A brand entering a near-empty category can occasionally get named early, because an AI tool has little else to cite. For nearly every Malaysian SME, though, the category already has competitors with real content. GEO mentions then arrive only after the site ranks and its pages are worth quoting. Build the foundation first, and treat an early mention as a bonus.
Which matters more in 2026, ranking or being quoted?
Both, and increasingly the quote. A blue-link ranking still sends traffic. But a March 2025 Pew Research Center study of US browsing found a clear shift. When Google showed an AI summary, users clicked a search result in only 8% of visits, against 15% with no summary. Keep ranking, and add answer-first structure to the pages that matter most.
How do I know if my pages are ready for AI answers?
Open your most important page and read only its first few lines. A stranger should get a complete, useful answer to the page's main question in that space. No scrolling past a hero image, no waiting for a script to load. If the answer is buried, sitting behind a script that AI engines do not run, or missing, the page needs the answer-first rebuild described above. A crawl check in why a site doesn't show on Google is a good next step.
