What Is an Entity in SEO?

An entity in SEO is a thing a search engine recognizes and stores knowledge about: a business, a person, a place, a product, or a concept. Google built its Knowledge Graph on this idea in 2012, describing it as understanding "things, not strings". The distinction now decides AI visibility, because ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google's AI Overviews recommend entities, not keywords. A Malaysian business that wants to be named needs one consistent identity across its website, schema, and listings.
How does a search engine recognize an entity?
A search engine recognizes an entity by connecting every mention of it into a single record with known properties and relationships. Google announced this model in May 2012 with the Knowledge Graph. At launch it already held more than 500 million objects and 3.5 billion facts about them and the relationships between them (Google, May 2012, linked above).
The word "storming" is a string: letters that could mean weather or a military maneuver. Storming Solutions is an entity: a specific company with an address, services, and a history the engine can attach facts to.
| String thinking | Entity thinking | |
|---|---|---|
| The unit | Keywords typed into a search box | Things the engine has a record for |
| Matching | Exact and similar words | The business itself, under any of its names |
| What wins | Pages repeating the phrase | Sources the engine trusts about the thing |
Once the record exists, the engine can answer questions about the entity even when the query never spells its name the same way.
Why do entities matter more in AI search?
Entities matter more in AI search because a recommendation is an entity-level act. Ask ChatGPT for "a web design company in KL that understands SEO" and the answer is a list of named businesses. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of becoming one of them.
An engine can only recommend what it can identify. If you appear as three name variants, two phone numbers, and an outdated address, the engine holds three weak records instead of one strong one.
The same identity work feeds the trust layer in Google's rater guidelines, where E-E-A-T asks who is behind a page.
A clear entity is what makes "who" answerable.
How does a small business become a clear entity?
A small business becomes a clear entity by using one exact identity everywhere and labeling it in the formats engines read. The work is unglamorous and compounding:
- Pick one canonical name, address, and phone format, then enforce NAP consistency across your site, directories, and socials.
- Add LocalBusiness schema markup so the identity is machine-readable on your own domain.
- Keep your Google Business Profile complete and current. Google's local guidance says businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up.
- Describe your business plainly on your About and service pages, in one sentence a machine could quote: what you do, for whom, from where.
- Define named things on first mention, the way this article does. Every clean definition is one more fact the engine can attach.
A pattern we've noticed on local sites: the LocalBusiness details in the code stop matching the visible page after a move or a number change. The two must agree, or the mismatch weakens the record the schema was meant to strengthen.
What weakens an entity?
An entity weakens whenever the web disagrees with itself about you. The common causes: name variants (Sdn Bhd here, a trading name there), stale listings from a moved office, and a missing or wrong schema block. An About page that never states what the business does belongs on the list too.
None of these hurt a human reader much. All of them split or thin the record an engine holds, and a thin record loses recommendations to a competitor with a clean one.
You can watch this from the outside by measuring your AI visibility and logging how engines describe you month to month.
Frequently asked questions
Is an entity the same as a keyword?
No. A keyword is a string of words people type; an entity is the thing those words refer to. Keywords still matter for matching a query, but modern engines resolve queries to entities where they can. Optimizing only for keyword repetition targets the matching layer and leaves the knowledge layer, where recommendations happen, empty.
Does my business need a Knowledge Panel to be an entity?
No. The Knowledge Panel is one visible surface of Google's entity records, and most small businesses never get a full one. Your business can still be a clear, well-attested entity through consistent listings, schema, and a complete Business Profile. That is the layer AI assistants draw on when they name businesses in an answer.
Does schema markup create an entity?
Not by itself. Schema markup labels the entity information already on your pages so machines can read it without guessing. The entity itself is established by agreement across sources: your site, your Google Business Profile, directories, and coverage elsewhere. Schema is the signal you control most directly, which is why we treat it as step one, never the whole job.
How do I check how Google sees my business?
Search your exact business name, then the name plus your suburb or city. Read what comes back: your Business Profile, your site, and any listing with old details. Then ask ChatGPT and Gemini what they know about your business. The answers show the record's current state, including the errors worth fixing first.
Are entities only relevant for local businesses?
No. Products, software, publications, and people are entities too, and the same consistency rules apply to each. Local businesses simply feel the effect soonest, because local queries lean hard on identity signals like address and category. An online-only brand builds the same record through its site, schema, and the places that mention it.
Is entity SEO a separate service I need to buy?
Usually not. Entity work is a layer inside competent SEO and AI visibility work: consistency, schema, profile upkeep, and clear self-description. Treat a standalone "entity SEO package" pitch as a rebranded fundamental, and ask what it contains that your current SEO does not.
Build one clear identity
Storming Solutions builds websites and runs SEO, AEO, and GEO for Malaysian businesses from Kuala Lumpur. Entity consistency is baked into both: the schema, the profile, and the site telling one story. Our honest take: identity disagreement usually sits upstream of content quality, so it is worth fixing first.
