Is Domain Authority a Real Google Metric?

Jump to section

No. Domain Authority is a score from Moz, an SEO software company, and Moz's own documentation says it is "not a direct ranking factor". Google never sees it, issues it, or uses it. The score predicts, on a 1-to-100 scale, how likely a site is to rank compared with others in Moz's index. That makes it a useful comparison tool and a meaningless grade, so treat any promise built on it accordingly.

What is Domain Authority, exactly?

Domain Authority (DA) is Moz's estimate of ranking strength, calculated from its own crawl of the web, the Link Explorer index, using dozens of mostly link-based factors. Higher scores indicate a greater predicted ability to rank.

The scale is not linear. Moz notes it is easier to grow from twenty to thirty than from seventy to eighty, so score gaps at the top of the scale mean far more than the same gaps at the bottom.

It is also relative by design. Moz positions DA for benchmarking against competitors, which means your number can move when other sites change, without anything happening on yours.

What does Google actually use?

Google describes its link signals in different terms, and none of them is a purchasable score. Its How Search Works documentation says one factor in assessing quality is "if other prominent websites link or refer to the content", weighed together with meaning, relevance, usability, and context.

Google's ranking documentation describes no single site-wide authority number and does not reference Domain Authority. The name does a lot of quiet marketing work here. It sounds official, and business owners often repeat it as if Google issued it.

That confusion is worth naming because sales pitches exploit it. A proposal that guarantees "DA 40 within three months" is guaranteeing movement on a vendor's scoreboard, not on Google. It is a cousin of the ranking guarantee, and deserves the same suspicion.

How should a business owner read vendor scores?

As a relative gauge inside one tool, tracked over time, never as an absolute grade.

Score Who makes it What it actually measures
Domain Authority Moz Predicted ranking ability, from Moz's link index
Domain Rating Ahrefs Link-profile strength, from Ahrefs' link index
Authority Score Semrush Blended quality estimate, from Semrush's data

None of the three rows comes from Google. Three rules keep the metrics honest:

  1. Compare within the same tool. Moz's DA, Ahrefs' Domain Rating, and Semrush's Authority Score use different indexes and math, so numbers from different tools do not translate.
  2. Compare against direct competitors, not against global giants. A KL renovation firm gains nothing from measuring itself against Wikipedia.
  3. Watch the trend, not the level. A score drifting up alongside real earned links tells a story; a one-point wobble tells you nothing.

In our experience the lowest-quote instinct can backfire when clients compare SEO proposals, and vendor scores feed that instinct: a big promised number makes a weak proposal look measurable. What the score will never show is whether inquiries, calls, and sales moved, which is the measurement that actually settles whether SEO works.

Do authority scores predict AI visibility?

Only weakly. Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands (May 2025) found branded web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, while backlink counts managed 0.218 and Ahrefs' own Domain Rating reached only 0.326, far below mentions.

The mechanism is simple: AI engines assemble answers from text about you, and a score inside one vendor's database is not text about you. A brand mentioned across the Malaysian web outperforms a high-scoring domain nobody talks about. That is the logic behind generative engine optimization, and the same reason our SEO work in Malaysia reports business outcomes rather than scores.

Frequently asked questions

Is Domain Authority the same as Ahrefs Domain Rating?

No. They are separate vendor metrics from separate companies, built on separate link indexes with separate formulas. A site can score noticeably differently on each.

They answer the same kind of question, so pick one tool for benchmarking and stay inside it.

Can an agency guarantee a Domain Authority increase?

Technically it can even deliver one, and that is the problem: bulk links can inflate a vendor score while doing nothing for, or actively harming, your Google visibility. The score is manipulable precisely because it is not Google's.

Treat a DA guarantee in a proposal as a red flag, the same class as selling you backlinks.

Why did my Domain Authority drop when nothing changed on my site?

Because the metric is relative and recalculated against Moz's whole index. When other sites gain links, or Moz updates its index and formula, your score can slip without a single change on your side.

A vendor-score dip with stable rankings, traffic, and inquiries is noise. Ignore it.

Does a high Domain Authority mean more traffic?

No. The score predicts ranking ability in general; it does not measure whether you rank for queries that matter, or whether those rankings turn into visitors and customers.

A niche Malaysian site with a modest score can out-earn a high-scoring generalist because it wins the searches its buyers actually type.

Should Domain Authority be an SEO KPI?

Not a primary one. It can sit in a report as context, but paying for score movement invites work that games the metric instead of growing the business.

Better KPIs are the ones money notices: qualified inquiries, calls, bookings, and the rankings on queries with buying intent behind them.

The scoreboard is not the referee

Storming Solutions delivers SEO, AEO, and GEO for Malaysian businesses, and we report progress in rankings, traffic, and inquiries, with vendor scores as footnotes at most. Our stance: any metric a vendor sells can be gamed, so we optimize for the outcomes Google and your customers actually reward.
