What Are Backlinks (and Do They Still Matter)?

A backlink is a link from another website to yours. Google's How Search Works documentation treats links as a quality signal: whether "other prominent websites link or refer to the content" is a sign the information is trustworthy. So backlinks still matter in 2026, with one large shift: for AI answers, an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands found brand mentions predict visibility far better than backlink counts.
How do backlinks work?
A backlink works like a reference. When one site links to another, engines read that as the linking site vouching for the destination, and the vote counts for more when the voucher is itself reputable.
Google states the principle plainly. Its ranking documentation lists content quality among its five key factors, and names links from prominent websites as one signal of trustworthiness. The same page is careful to add that factor weight varies by query.
That caveat matters. For a query like "plumber in Cheras", proximity and a complete Google Business Profile can outweigh a rival's link advantage. Backlinks are one signal among many, not the whole game.
What makes one backlink worth more than another?
Relevance and editorial choice decide a backlink's value. A link earns the most weight when a genuinely related, reputable site chose to give it, in real content, because your page deserved the reference.
| Link type | How it happens | What it signals |
|---|---|---|
| Editorial | A publication, supplier, or blogger cites your page | Genuine endorsement, the strongest kind |
| Citation | Directories and profiles list your business details | Consistency and legitimacy, mostly local value |
| Sponsored | You pay for placement, marked as an ad | Advertising, passes no ranking credit |
| Spam | Automated comments, link farms, paid networks | Manipulation, a policy violation |
Citation-type links, your business listings, do quiet local work: engines cross-check them for NAP consistency rather than authority. The spam row is where Google draws a hard line, covered below.
A pattern we've noticed in client conversations: SEO, AEO, and GEO blur together, and the backlink conversation inherits that blur. The same link gets expected to do every job. It doesn't, which is exactly what the AI-era evidence shows.
Do backlinks still matter in the AI era?
Yes for search rankings, much less for AI mentions. Ahrefs measured what correlates with a brand appearing in Google's AI Overviews across 75,000 brands. In its May 2025 study, branded web mentions scored 0.664 against 0.218 for backlink counts.
The mechanism explains the gap. A language model learns and retrieves from text, and a mention of your brand in that text is visible to it whether or not an anchor tag wraps the words. The hyperlink was built for crawlers and PageRank; the sentence around it is what an AI engine actually reads.
That is why GEO work chases mentions, reviews, and coverage rather than raw link counts, and why the pages engines quote are chosen by answer quality, as how AI engines choose citations breaks down. A good backlink usually brings a mention with it, so the two overlap, but the mention is the part the AI era rewards.
Where does link building cross Google's line?
The line is intent to manipulate rankings. Google's spam policies name "buying or selling links for ranking purposes" among their link-spam examples, next to excessive link exchanges and automated link programs. Violating sites "may rank lower in results or not appear in results at all", in Google's own words.
Paid placement itself is fine, as advertising. Google asks that ads and paid
placements carry a
rel="sponsored" attribute,
which marks them as paid links it generally will not follow. Paying for a
link that passes ranking credit is the violation, and it can end in a
manual action, a human-reviewed penalty.
We treat the whole question as a buying decision, in should you buy backlinks, and the honest answer there is no.
Frequently asked questions
Are backlinks a Google ranking factor?
Yes. Google's own ranking documentation names links from prominent websites as a signal used to assess content quality, one of its five key factor groups.
The weight is query-dependent, and links work alongside relevance, freshness, and usability rather than above them. E-E-A-T thinking runs through all of it: a link is one way trust gets demonstrated.
How many backlinks does my website need?
There is no target number, and any vendor quoting one is guessing. A few relevant, editorial links from real Malaysian sites do more than hundreds of directory entries, because engines weigh who links, not how many.
If your site isn't ranking at all, links are rarely the first problem to check; indexing and technical basics come first.
Are directory listings backlinks?
Yes, technically, but their main value is verification rather than authority. Legitimate directories, Google Business Profile, and industry associations confirm your business exists at consistent details.
Low-quality directories built for links sit in Google's spam examples, so volume-for-volume's-sake harms more than it helps.
Do social media links count as backlinks?
Mostly not for ranking credit, since platforms mark outbound links so crawlers don't follow them. The profile and the conversation still matter: they generate the brand mentions that AI-era visibility correlates with.
A viral post rarely moves rankings directly. The coverage it triggers can.
What does a good backlink look like for a Malaysian SME?
A real organization in your world citing you for a real reason. Think of a supplier case study, a trade association member page, local media covering something you did, or a client's site crediting your work.
Each of those also creates a brand mention in Malaysian context, which compounds the local SEO value.
Can bad backlinks hurt my site?
Usually not, because Google largely ignores links it doesn't trust. Its disavow tool documentation says most sites will not need the tool, and warns that incorrect use "can potentially harm your site's performance."
The exception is a genuine pattern of manipulative links, usually ones a past vendor built, which can draw a manual action worth cleaning up.
Links are earned, mentions are the prize
Storming Solutions runs SEO, AEO, and GEO for Malaysian businesses, and we treat link building as a by-product of being worth citing, never as a purchase. In our experience clients expect ranking results faster than link-earning honestly delivers, so we say the uncomfortable part out loud: authority compounds over months, not weeks.
