Should You Buy Backlinks?

No. Buying backlinks that pass ranking credit violates
Google's link spam policy,
which lists "buying or selling links for ranking purposes" as its first
example. A caught site "may rank lower in results or not appear in results
at all", per the same policy. Paid placements are legitimate only
when marked rel="sponsored", which strips the ranking value you paid for.
The safe route is earning mentions, which now predict AI visibility better
than links anyway.
What does Google's policy actually say?
Google's spam policies define link spam by intent: links created primarily to manipulate rankings. The buying example is broad on purpose. It covers exchanging money for links, but also goods, services, or a free product in return for a link.
The same list names excessive link exchanges, automated link-building programs, low-quality directory links, and paid guest posts with optimized anchor text. Most commercial link packages sold to Malaysian SMEs fall into at least one of those buckets.
Paying for placement is allowed as advertising. Google asks that paid links
carry the
sponsored attribute,
which marks them as paid so it generally will not follow them. That
distinction is the whole answer: an ad is fine, a bought ranking signal is
not. The wider rulebook split is covered
in white hat vs black hat SEO.
What are you actually buying?
Usually a package: a number of "guest posts" or "niche edits" on sites the seller controls or brokers. The sites tend to exist for selling links, with thin content, no real audience, and dozens of unrelated commercial articles.
| The pitch says | The reality |
|---|---|
| "High-authority guest posts" | Sites scored by vendor metrics, built to sell placements |
| "Permanent placement" | Permanent only until the network is caught or folds |
| "Completely safe, white hat" | The buyer's domain carries all the risk; the seller keeps the fee |
Those patterns are detectable, and detection is the risk you carry, not the seller. The seller keeps the fee either way. Your domain absorbs whatever Google concludes about the network it just joined.
In our experience clients come to SEO expecting results faster than honest work delivers, and that impatience is the exact gap link sellers price. The pitch works because the timeline pressure is real. The product still isn't.
What happens if Google catches you?
Two things can happen: nothing good, quietly, or something bad, formally. The quiet version is Google simply ignoring the bought links, meaning the spend earned nothing at all.
The formal version is a manual action for unnatural links, where a human reviewer flags the site and pages get "ranked lower or omitted from search results without any visual indication to the user". Recovering means cleaning up the links and filing a reconsideration request, and Google notes reviews of link cases take longer than most.
Cleanup sometimes involves the disavow tool, which Google itself calls an advanced feature that "can potentially harm your site's performance" when used incorrectly. Most sites never need it, and needing it is the tell that the shortcut became a liability.
What should you do instead?
Earn mentions, because they outperform bought links on both fronts. For rankings, editorial backlinks from real sites carry the weight bought ones fake. For AI answers, Ahrefs' 75,000-brand study (May 2025) found branded web mentions correlate with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, against 0.218 for backlink counts.
The practical sources for a Malaysian SME are unglamorous and work:
- Suppliers, partners, and trade associations that already know you.
- Local media and industry publications, when you have something real to show them.
- Client sites crediting your work.
- Legitimate listings, kept to consistent business details.
- Answer-first content worth citing, the approach our SEO in Malaysia guide is built on.
None of that is fast. All of it compounds, and none of it can be confiscated by the next spam update.
Frequently asked questions
Is every paid link against Google's rules?
No. Paid links are fine as advertising when they carry rel="sponsored"
or rel="nofollow", which mark them as ads Google generally will not
follow. Sponsorships, ads, and paid directories operate this way
legitimately.
What violates the policy is paying for links that pass ranking signals, which is precisely what SEO link packages sell.
Do link exchanges count as buying links?
Excessive ones do. Google's link spam examples include "excessive link exchanges", the "link to me and I'll link to you" arrangements done at scale for rankings.
Two genuinely related businesses referencing each other is normal web behavior. A spreadsheet of a hundred swap partners is a scheme.
How do I recognize a link seller's pitch?
The email offers "high DA guest posts" at a fixed price per link, often with a menu of metrics and turnaround times. Legitimate publications do not sell ranking credit by the unit.
A quoted Domain Authority number is part of the costume: it is a vendor metric, not a Google one.
Should I disavow links a past vendor bought?
Only if there is a real problem to solve. Google says most sites do not need the disavow tool, because it already ignores links it does not trust.
If you received a manual action notice, or a link audit shows a clear paid pattern, cleanup and disavow become worth it. Do it with evidence, not anxiety.
Can competitors hurt me by buying spammy links to my site?
Usually not, for the same reason old bought links rarely hurt: Google discounts links it does not trust rather than punishing the target by default.
If a genuinely strange link surge coincides with a ranking drop, investigate before reacting, because the cause is usually something else.
The spend that should go elsewhere
Storming Solutions runs SEO, AEO, and GEO for Malaysian businesses, and we do not buy links for clients, full stop. We hold a simple position: money spent renting ranking signals is money not spent becoming the business engines mention on their own.
