What Is Google Gemini?

Google Gemini is Google's AI assistant, built on the Gemini series of models from Google DeepMind. You ask it questions in the Gemini app or at gemini.google.com, and it answers in conversation across text, images, and other formats. For a business, Gemini is one of the AI engines where customers now ask for recommendations, alongside ChatGPT and Perplexity. Being readable to it is part of AI visibility.
What is Gemini, and who builds it?
Gemini is Google's AI assistant, described on its own page as an assistant from Google. It is built by Google DeepMind, the company's AI research division.
The name covers two things people often blur: the assistant you chat with, and the models that also power other Google products.
That split matters, because Gemini shows up in more than one place. The standalone app is one surface, and the same models also feed AI features inside Google Search.
Gemini the app vs Gemini inside Google Search
Gemini the app and Gemini inside Search are not the same surface. The app is a standalone assistant you open on its own.
Inside Google Search, the same models power AI Overviews and AI Mode, which are features of Search rather than the Gemini app.
| Surface | What it is | How you appear |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini app | Standalone assistant at gemini.google.com | Model training plus live grounding |
| AI Overviews and AI Mode | AI answers inside Google Search | Normal indexing and snippet settings |
The consequence is about control. Because AI Overviews and AI Mode are part of Search, they follow ordinary indexing, the same signals behind any search result.
Appearing in them is governed by Googlebot, not by the training control below. Treating those two as one task leads to the wrong fixes.
How does Gemini learn about your business?
Gemini draws on two sources, and telling them apart shows what you can influence. One is what its models absorbed in training. The other is what it retrieves live when it grounds an answer in current web results.
The training and grounding side has a dedicated control, Google-Extended. Google's crawler documentation, updated in July 2026, says it lets publishers manage whether their content is "used for training future generations of Gemini models" and for grounding.
The same page states Google-Extended "does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search nor is it used as a ranking signal".
So a block there changes what Gemini may learn or ground from your site. It changes nothing about how you rank on Google. The two systems are deliberately separate.
How do you become visible in Gemini?
You earn a place in Gemini the way you earn any AI citation: be crawlable, and answer real questions plainly. A page that states its answer near the top, in clear language on a topic you cover in depth, is one an engine can lift.
That discipline is answer engine optimization.
The first thing we check when a business wants to appear in AI answers is its own robots.txt. A single inherited block, left by a plugin or an old setup, can undo the rest of the work. Getting named across engines is the broader craft of being mentioned by AI assistants.
Frequently asked questions
Does Gemini appear in normal Google search results?
The Gemini app is separate from Google Search, but the Gemini models also power AI features inside Search. An AI Overview or AI Mode answer uses those models, yet it is a Search feature governed by normal indexing. The chat app at gemini.google.com is the separate assistant you visit on its own.
Does optimizing for Gemini hurt my Google ranking?
No. Google-Extended, the control for Gemini training and grounding, is not a ranking signal, by Google's own wording. Allowing or blocking it changes what Gemini can learn from your site, not where you rank. The clear, answer-first pages that suit Gemini are the same ones that tend to rank on Google.
Should I block Google-Extended?
Usually not, if you want to be found in AI answers. Blocking it limits how Gemini can learn from or ground on your content, which works against visibility for most businesses. Publishers protecting content they sell are the main exception. The wider trade-off sits in whether to block AI crawlers.
How is Gemini different from ChatGPT?
Gemini and ChatGPT are both conversational AI assistants that can search the web. They come from different companies, Google and OpenAI, and run on different models. For a business, each has its own crawler and its own path to being cited. Visibility in one does not guarantee visibility in the other.
How do I know if Gemini mentions my business?
Ask Gemini the questions your customers ask, using your category and location, and see whether your business is named and what it says. Answers shift between sessions, so repeat the check over time rather than trusting one try. This is the manual half of measuring AI visibility.
Being found when Malaysians ask Gemini
Storming Solutions runs SEO, AEO, and GEO for Malaysian businesses from Kuala Lumpur. Being readable to Gemini is part of the same work as ranking on Google, not a separate product to buy.
We will not promise you a fixed spot in any AI answer, because no honest provider can control what a model says.
