What Is Google AI Mode?

Google AI Mode is a dedicated AI-powered search experience inside Google Search, built for complex questions and run on a custom version of Gemini. You open it as a separate surface, ask a nuanced question, and get a full written answer with links to the supporting pages. It differs from an AI Overview, which appears automatically as a summary box above your normal results.
How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?
AI Mode and AI Overviews are both Gemini-powered, but they meet you in different places. An AI Overview is a summary box that appears automatically atop your ordinary results. AI Mode is a separate surface you choose to enter for a back-and-forth.
The table sets out the practical split.
| AI Overview | AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | Automatically, above the blue links | A separate surface you open |
| Best for | A quick answer to one question | Complex, multi-part questions |
| Format | Short summary with a few links | Full response, follow-ups, supporting links |
| What triggers it | Google decides per query | You choose to enter it |
| Engine | Gemini | A custom version of Gemini |
Google notes that the two "may use different models and techniques," so their answers and links vary. The distinction matters less than what they share. Both draw their answers from pages Google has already indexed.
How does AI Mode work?
AI Mode runs on a "query fan-out" technique. Instead of one search, it issues several related searches at once across subtopics and data sources. Then it assembles the results into a single answer.
That is why it handles a question you would once have split into five searches. Google calls AI Mode "particularly helpful for queries where further exploration, reasoning, or complex comparisons are needed," and it links to the sites it used.
Because the answer is assembled live from indexed pages, the same rule as AI Overviews applies. A page is only used if Google can read it and it states the answer clearly.
How do you show up in AI Mode?
You earn a place in AI Mode the same way you earn any Google result. A page must be indexed, eligible for a snippet, and clear enough to quote.
Google is explicit that there are "no additional technical requirements" to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode (Google Search Central, updated December 2025). No file, tag, or markup places you there.
Google adds that ordinary SEO fundamentals still carry their weight. That is the premise of answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization. The crawlable, answer-first pages that rank well are the ones these surfaces cite.
The first thing we check for a site that wants AI mentions is plainer than owners expect. Does the page state the answer near the top, and does its robots.txt let Google's crawler in? A blocked crawler or a buried answer keeps you out before any strategy begins.
Is AI Mode available in Malaysia?
AI Mode rolled out in stages, so availability depends on where and when you look. It began as a United States experiment in early 2025, then opened to all US users in May 2025. By October 2025 Google had extended it to over 200 countries and more than 35 new languages (Google).
Google has not published a simple country list that names Malaysia. Local availability can trail the headline numbers, and it can differ by account, language, and query.
The takeaway holds regardless. The pages that answer clearly and rank well are the ones AI Mode can draw on wherever it runs, which keeps SEO in Malaysia the groundwork.
Frequently asked questions
Is Google AI Mode the same as AI Overviews?
No. An AI Overview is a summary box that appears automatically above your normal results. AI Mode is a separate, conversational surface you deliberately open. Both run on Gemini and both use query fan-out, but only AI Mode is a place you switch into. For a quick fact you may never leave the results page; for a complex comparison, AI Mode goes deeper.
Do I need to do anything special to appear in AI Mode?
No. Google states there are no additional technical requirements beyond being indexed and eligible for a normal snippet. No AI file, schema, or markup puts you in AI Mode. Answer real questions clearly on pages Google already ranks, and you are eligible to be one of the supporting links.
Is AI Mode available to Malaysian searchers?
It is expanding globally rather than launching everywhere at once. By October 2025 Google had extended AI Mode to over 200 countries and more than 35 languages, but it does not publish a per-country list naming Malaysia. Availability can differ by account and language, so the honest answer is to check it in your own Google Search.
Does AI Mode replace normal Google search?
Not for most searches. AI Mode is an option you open for harder, multi-part questions. Ordinary results and AI Overviews still handle the bulk of everyday queries. The broader question of whether AI answers replace classic search is covered in will AI search replace Google.
How is AI Mode different from ChatGPT or Perplexity?
AI Mode is Google's own AI search surface, drawing on Google's index and returning links to supporting pages. Other AI answer engines work similarly in spirit, giving a synthesized answer with citations, but each runs on its own model and its own view of the web. The shared lesson is that clear, citable pages win across all of them.
