What Is the Local Pack?

Updated 27 August 2026

Jump to section

The local pack is the block of three business listings, under a small map, at the top of Google's results for searches with local intent. Think "plumber near me" or "dental clinic Bangsar". The listings are Google Business Profiles, not websites, and Google orders them by relevance, distance, and prominence, per Google's own help documentation. To appear there, build the profile first. The website supports your position, but the profile is the entry ticket.

Where does the local pack appear?

The local pack appears when Google decides a search wants a nearby business rather than a web page. That covers "near me" phrases, service-plus-place searches like "aircon service Puchong", and plain service words typed from a phone in that area, all signals of local intent.

It usually sits above the traditional organic results, which makes it some of the most valuable screen space in local search. Tapping a listing opens the business's full profile, and the "More places" link below the three expands into the full map view.

Google's own documentation just calls these local results. The local pack is the industry's name for the packed box of three.

Where do the local pack listings come from?

Every listing in the local pack is a Google Business Profile, the free listing any legitimate business can claim. Your website is not what appears there; the profile is.

That distinction moves the work. Opening hours, categories, photos, reviews, and posts all live on the profile, and an incomplete profile competes badly no matter how good the website behind it is.

The first thing we check on a stalled listing is whether the primary category matches how customers actually search. The category decides which searches the business is even eligible for, and a vague one quietly caps everything downstream.

How does Google rank the local pack?

Google ranks local results by the three signals named in the lead. Relevance is how well the profile matches the search. Distance is how far the business sits from the searcher. Prominence is how well known and well reviewed it looks online.

The same help page, as read in August 2026, is blunt about shortcuts: there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. It also states that businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local results. More reviews and positive ratings, it adds, can help local ranking.

Distance you cannot change. The practical work is relevance and prominence, which is why our guide to ranking higher on Google Maps spends its time on categories, profile completeness, and genuine reviews.

Prominence also draws on the wider web. Consistent name, address, and phone details across directories feed it, and so does the general authority a site earns through ordinary SEO work.

How is the local pack different from organic results?

The local pack and the organic list rank different things, so they reward different work.

Local pack Organic results
What is ranked Your Google Business Profile A page on your website
Where a click goes Your profile, then call, map, or site Straight to the page
Main levers Category, completeness, reviews, proximity Content, links, technical health
Who competes Businesses near the searcher Any page on the topic

A business can win one list while being absent from the other. A KL clinic can top the local pack on proximity and reviews while its website never ranks organically. The reverse happens to businesses with strong content and a neglected profile.

For most service businesses the honest priority is both, in that order. Claim and complete the profile this week; the website's rankings are the slower build.

Frequently asked questions

Can you pay to appear in the local pack?

No. Google states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking, so the organic three cannot be bought. Ads can appear near local results, but they are labeled as ads and sit apart from the organic listings. Anyone selling a guaranteed local pack position deserves the same skepticism as any guaranteed ranking pitch.

Do you need a website to appear in the local pack?

No, a Google Business Profile alone can appear. The website still matters twice over: it feeds the prominence signal, and it is where a serious buyer lands after the profile. The profile starts the conversation; the website is what convinces someone comparing three options.

How many businesses show in the local pack?

Three, with a "More places" link that expands to the full map list. The fixed shape is where the name comes from. Position four is effectively invisible, because the searcher must actively expand the list, so small movements matter more here than in organic results.

Is the local pack the same as Google Maps?

They run on the same data but appear in different places. The local pack is the three-listing preview inserted into a normal Google search; Google Maps is the full app behind it. Profile work moves both at once, which is why we treat them as one job rather than two.

Why did my business disappear from the local pack?

Usually one of three causes. A competitor now matches the search better, your profile lost relevance after an edit or a suspension, or the searcher's location changed the distance math. Check the profile's status and primary category first. If the site itself has stopped appearing too, work through the wider visibility checklist before blaming the pack.

The three lines that decide local business

Storming Solutions runs SEO, AEO, and GEO for Malaysian businesses from Kuala Lumpur. Local visibility sits inside that work: profile, categories, reviews, and the website behind them, treated as one system. We think the local pack is where a service business usually sees progress first, because a profile responds faster than site rankings do.
