How Do You Set Up Google Business Profile in Malaysia?

Updated 1 August 2026

Jump to section

Google Business Profile is the free listing that controls how your business appears in Google Maps and local search. Setting one up in Malaysia takes five steps: claim it, complete every field, verify, match your details across the web, then gather reviews. With Google handling about 93% of Malaysian search (StatCounter, June 2026), a complete, verified profile is the highest-return free asset a local business can hold.

  1. Claim the listing at google.com/business, or create it if Google has not auto-generated one.
  2. Complete every field: primary category, services, hours, service areas, description, and photos.
  3. Verify the business through the method Google assigns you.
  4. Make the name, address, and phone number identical to your website and every directory.
  5. Collect and answer reviews, and keep hours current around public holidays.

What does a complete Google Business Profile include?

A complete profile includes the primary category, extra categories, a plain-language description, service or product lists, opening hours, real photos, and a service area for businesses that travel to customers. The primary category carries the most weight.

"Kedai baiki komputer" and "IT support" surface for different searches. A shop whose customers type "laptop repair" belongs under "Computer repair service", not a broad consulting category, because Google matches profiles to the words searchers use. So pick the category customers actually type, then add the rest as secondary. In our experience, the first thing to check on a stalled listing is whether the primary category matches how people actually search.

Photos deserve more effort than most SMEs give them. Genuine shots of the shopfront, team, and work make the choice easier for a customer comparing three map pins.

How does verification work in Malaysia?

Google assigns the verification method when you claim the profile, so you do not get to choose. Common methods for Malaysian businesses are a video walkthrough of the premises, a phone or SMS code, and for some categories a postcard mailed to the registered address.

The address you enter must match your signage and documents. Service-area businesses can hide the street address after verifying. Two cautions come from Google's own rules.

Never buy a "verified profile" from a third party. A profile in someone else's account is the same ownership trap covered in who should own your accounts.

And never stuff keywords into the business name field: "Storming Solutions | Best SEO Agency KL" invites suspension where the plain name does not.

Do reviews actually move local ranking?

Reviews feed prominence, one of the three local ranking factors Google names in its "How to improve your local ranking" help page: relevance, distance, and prominence.

Ranking factor What it means What you influence
Relevance How well the profile matches the search Category, services, description
Distance How far you are from the searcher Accurate address and service area
Prominence How known and trusted the business is Reviews, citations, NAP consistency

Distance is the one factor you cannot optimize. A plumber in Cheras will rarely surface for a searcher in Klang however complete the profile, so an accurate address and an honest service area are all Google asks of you there. Relevance and prominence are where the work pays.

More genuine reviews with real detail, answered professionally, signal an active business. That prominence is a large part of how businesses rank in the Malaysian map results.

Two rules keep the signal safe. Never buy or incentivize reviews, which Google removes and can suspend profiles over. And answer negative reviews calmly with facts, because the reply is read by every future customer, not by the angry one. A steady trickle of real reviews beats a one-week burst of ten.

Who should own the Google Business Profile?

The business owns the profile: it lives in your Google account, and your agency or marketer is added as a manager with their own login. The ownership trap we see most often is a profile created inside the agency's account, so that reviews and ranking history become hostage when the relationship ends.

Checking this takes one minute in the profile's "People and access" settings. If the site behind your profile is also missing from normal results, work through why a website doesn't show on Google too. The map listing and the website reinforce each other, and local SEO is built on both.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Business Profile really free?

Yes. Claiming, verifying, and managing the listing costs nothing, and Google does not sell ranking inside the map results. Anyone charging you a fee "to verify" or "to guarantee" a map position is selling something Google gives away or cannot deliver. The only real cost is the time to complete the profile properly and keep it current.

How long does verification take in Malaysia?

Video and phone verification can complete in minutes to a few days, while a postcard method takes one to two weeks to arrive. Google decides which method you get, and some categories face extra checks. If a code never arrives or a video is rejected, you request a retry from inside the profile rather than creating a second listing.

Does NAP consistency matter for the profile?

Yes. Google cross-checks your name, address, and phone number across your website, directories, and social pages when deciding how much to trust a listing. Every mismatch, an old address here or "Jln" versus "Jalan" there, chips at that trust. The full cleanup checklist is in what NAP consistency is.

Can I rank on Google Maps without a website?

Yes, a complete profile can rank in the map results on its own, because Google treats the profile as its own entity. A website still helps, since it reinforces relevance and prominence and gives customers somewhere to learn more. Businesses with both a strong profile and a healthy site consistently outperform those leaning on one alone.

Can my agency manage the profile for me?

Yes, and that is the correct arrangement, as long as the profile lives in your Google account with the agency added as a manager. Never let a provider create the profile inside its own account. The one-minute check in "People and access" tells you which way round yours is set up today.
