What Is Open Graph (and Why Link Previews Break)?

Updated 17 October 2026

Jump to section

Open Graph is a set of <meta> tags in your page's <head> that tell social platforms what to show when someone shares your link. The protocol defines four required tags: og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url. Facebook, LinkedIn, and WhatsApp read them to build the preview card. Get them wrong, or leave an old version cached, and the preview breaks. Open Graph shapes link previews, not your Google ranking.

What Open Graph does

Open Graph turns a plain web page into a shareable object with a set title, image, and description. The protocol's own site says it enables "any web page to become a rich object in a social graph", and it names Facebook as its main example.

You add it as <meta> tags in the page <head>, each using a property attribute like property="og:title".

Without these tags, a platform has to guess. It may grab a random image or the wrong headline, which is where most broken previews start.

The four required tags

The protocol lists four properties as required for every page. Platforms also lean on og:description: LinkedIn lists it among the tags that must exist, and WhatsApp shows it under the title.

Tag What it sets Example value
og:title The headline on the card Your page's title
og:type The kind of object website or article
og:image The preview image An absolute image URL
og:url The canonical link https://yoursite.com/page

The image does the most work, so add og:image:alt to describe it too. The protocol advises that if a page specifies an og:image, it should specify og:image:alt.

Like your title tag and meta description, these tags describe the page. The difference is the main reader: title tags and meta descriptions are written for search results, Open Graph for social and messaging previews. Google still reads some OG tags, such as og:title, as hints.

A broken preview is almost always one of two problems: the tags are missing, or the platform cached an old version.

Missing or malformed tags are the first cause. For example, a link can share on WhatsApp with no image at all. The og:image tag is absent, or points to a relative path instead of a full absolute URL.

WhatsApp is among the most-used platforms in Malaysia, and it needs an absolute image URL to show the picture.

Caching is the second cause. Facebook and other platforms store your Open Graph data the first time a link is shared, so a later fix does not appear until that cache refreshes.

Meta's Sharing Debugger handles this. The tool lets you preview how a link will look and re-scrape the page, so the platform picks up your updated tags.

One tag set covers several apps. X can fall back to your Open Graph tags when its own twitter: card tags are missing, so clean OG tags serve Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, and X at once.

Does Open Graph help my SEO?

Google does not list Open Graph as a ranking factor. It controls how your link looks when shared, not where your page sits in search results.

Google's documentation treats Open Graph as a source of hints, never as a ranking signal. It reads og:title as one input for title links and og:image for Discover thumbnails. Its video guidance also lists Open Graph as one way to describe a video. Its main home is still the social layer, next to schema markup for search.

The indirect gain is still real. A clear title and sharp image earn more clicks when a link is shared, and those visits and mentions feed the channels that do build authority.

A pattern we see is previews that quietly broke after a site move, because og:url and og:image still point at the old domain. The markup and the live site drifted apart, exactly as they do with on-page schema.

Frequently asked questions

What is Open Graph in plain terms?

Open Graph is code that tells social apps what to show when your link is shared. It sits as <meta> tags in your page's head and sets the preview title, image, and web address. Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, and X all read it to build the little card people see. Without it, those apps guess, and the guess is often an odd image or the wrong headline.

Why is my WhatsApp link preview not showing an image?

Usually the og:image tag is missing or wrong. WhatsApp's link-preview guidance asks for an absolute image URL under 600 KB and at least 300 pixels wide. A relative path or an absent tag leaves the preview without a picture. If the tag looks correct but the old preview persists, the old image was cached. Re-scrape the link, and if the picture still does not change, give the new image a new file URL, since Meta caches images by URL.

Do Open Graph tags help my Google ranking?

No. Open Graph controls social and messaging previews, not search rankings. Google does not list OG tags as a ranking signal; its documentation treats them as hints, for example for title links and Discover thumbnails. The value is a better-looking, more clickable link when it is shared. That can bring traffic and mentions, but the tags themselves do not move your position in Google.

How do I fix a preview that still shows old information?

Re-scrape the link. Platforms cache your Open Graph data, so after you update the tags, the old preview can linger. Meta's Sharing Debugger lets you paste the URL, see what it currently reads, and force a fresh scrape. Once it re-reads the page, the updated title and image appear. On LinkedIn, Post Inspector does the same job: paste the URL to refresh the cached preview.

Do I still need Open Graph if I have schema markup?

Yes, they do different jobs. Schema markup describes your page to search engines for richer search results. Open Graph describes it to social and messaging platforms for link previews. One does not replace the other. A page aiming to look good in both Google and a WhatsApp share needs both, kept accurate and matched to the live page.

Set your preview once, and check it

Open Graph is small, quiet plumbing with an outsized effect: it decides whether your shared link looks trustworthy or broken. Add the four required tags, use an absolute image URL, and re-scrape after any change. Do that, and every share works for you instead of against you.

Storming Solutions builds custom-coded websites and runs SEO/AEO/GEO for Malaysian businesses from Kuala Lumpur, including the Open Graph tags behind every shared link on WhatsApp and social apps. We would rather fix a preview once than watch a good page share as a blank box.
