Do Videos Help Your SEO Rankings?

Updated 17 October 2026

Jump to section

No, Google does not name video as a ranking factor. Adding one will not push a page up the results on its own. What video does is earn eligibility: an indexed watch page with a valid thumbnail can reach Google's video results. VideoObject structured data then shapes how it appears, including key moments. And YouTube is the most-cited site in Google's AI Overviews, so video widens where you can appear.

Is video a Google ranking factor?

Video is not a ranking signal Google confirms. Its video SEO guidance never claims a video lifts a page's position, and frames everything around being found, not ranked higher.

Google says that following video SEO best practices "can help more people find your site through video results on Google". The payoff is appearance in a video feature, not a boost to the page itself.

That distinction matters.

Retrieval systems reward the page that best answers a query, and a video on a weak page inherits that weakness. Fix the page first, then let video add reach.

What makes a video eligible for video results

A video reaches Google's video features only when it meets a short list of indexing requirements. Miss one and the video simply will not show, however good it is.

Google's video documentation lists them plainly.

Requirement What it means
Indexed watch page The page holding the video is in Google's index
Performing well in Search The indexed page must already perform well in Search before its video is considered
Embedded on a watch page The video sits on a watch page, uncovered by other elements
Stable thumbnail A valid thumbnail loads from a URL that does not change

The page type matters too. A watch page's main purpose is to show a single video, like a video landing page or a news clip.

A blog post that merely reviews an embedded video is not treated as a watch page.

Help Google understand your video

You help Google by describing the video clearly and using standard embed code. Google finds videos referenced by a <video>, <iframe>, <embed>, or <object> element, so avoid loading them only through user actions or URL fragments.

Metadata does the describing. Google supports three sources: structured data (a VideoObject), video sitemaps, and the Open Graph protocol.

Keep every field consistent with the actual video, and give each video a unique name, description, and thumbnailUrl.

Key moments, the chapter-style segments in a result, are something Google tries to detect automatically. You can also set them yourself, with Clip markup on your own page or with timestamps in a YouTube video's description, and Google prioritizes the ones you set.

SeekToAction markup instead tells Google how your timestamp URLs work, so it can find the moments itself.

Where video actually pays off

Video earns its keep in engagement and AI answers, not a ranking bump. That is where the real visibility gain sits for most Malaysian businesses.

The clearest signal is in AI results. YouTube is the most-cited site in Google's AI Overviews in Ahrefs' September 2026 US data, narrowly ahead of Reddit. Ahrefs refreshes that ranking monthly, so the exact share moves. A helpful video on YouTube can pull your brand into an answer a text page would miss.

Then there is the hosting question. Whether a video belongs on your own site or on YouTube is a real trade-off, covered in hosting video on your site versus YouTube.

In our experience, video is where a fast page quietly turns slow. Heavy embeds pile up and drag load times, so we treat Core Web Vitals as the ceiling on how much video a page can carry.

Frequently asked questions

Does embedding a YouTube video improve my page's ranking?

Not directly. Google's video guidance says following best practices helps more people find your site through video results, but it never states that an embedded video raises the host page's position. The embed can appear in video features and keep visitors engaged, which is useful. It is not a ranking lever. Rank the page on content, speed, and links first, then add video for reach and engagement.

Do I need video structured data?

Not required, but recommended. Google can find and index a video from standard embed code alone. Adding VideoObject structured data lets you influence the thumbnail, description, and key moments, and makes the video eligible for richer video features. For a business with a handful of important videos, it is a low-effort way to control how they appear. Just keep every field matched to the actual video content.

Should I host videos on my site or on YouTube?

It depends on the goal, and both can appear in Google. YouTube handles delivery, reaches its own audience, and is heavily cited in AI answers. Self-hosting keeps viewers on your site but adds weight and cost. Many businesses embed a YouTube video on a relevant page to get both. The full trade-off, including page-speed impact, sits in our guide on hosting video on your site versus YouTube.

Will a video help me appear in AI search?

It can, especially through YouTube. YouTube is the single most-cited domain in Google's AI Overviews, so a clear, useful video gives AI answers another way to surface your brand. The video still has to genuinely answer the question, with an accurate title and description. A thin promotional clip earns nothing. Treat video as one more citable source, not a shortcut.

Why isn't my video showing in Google?

Usually an eligibility gap. The watch page may not be indexed, may not be performing in Search yet, may hide the video behind other elements, or may lack a stable thumbnail URL. Check that the page is indexed, the video uses a standard embed element, and a valid thumbnail loads. A video sitemap can also help Google discover videos it missed, and Search Console's Video indexing report lists the reasons a video was not indexed.

Use video to widen your reach, not to chase rank

Video will not lift a page on its own, and treating it as a ranking hack wastes effort. Its real value is eligibility and reach: video results, key moments, and a strong presence in Google's AI Overviews, which cite YouTube more than any other site. Build the page well, describe the video honestly, and let it earn attention.

Storming Solutions builds custom-coded websites and runs SEO/AEO/GEO for Malaysian businesses from Kuala Lumpur, including video pages structured to appear in search and stay fast. We would rather a video earn real engagement than sit on a page hoping to move a ranking it cannot.
