Do You Need Paid SEO Tools Like Ahrefs or Semrush?

Updated 12 September 2026

Jump to section

Most small Malaysian businesses do not need a paid SEO tool to start. Free tools cover the essentials. Google Search Console shows your real rankings and clicks, Google Keyword Planner and Google Trends supply keyword ideas, and Bing Webmaster Tools covers Bing and Copilot. Paid tools like Ahrefs (from about US$29 a month) and Semrush earn their cost later, once you publish regularly and need to track competitors at scale.

What can free tools already do?

Free tools already answer most SEO questions a small business has. You can find keywords, check what you rank for, and see what Google has indexed, all without paying.

Google Search Console is the most important one. It reports the real search queries that bring people to your site, plus impressions, clicks, average position, and indexing problems, straight from Google.

Google Keyword Planner is free with any Google Ads account and gives search-volume ranges and keyword ideas. Google Trends shows relative interest over time and which queries are rising. Bing Webmaster Tools adds free keyword data and covers indexing on Bing, which in turn feeds Microsoft Copilot.

What do paid tools add?

Paid tools add scale and competitor visibility that free tools do not. They hold large keyword databases, backlink indexes, rank trackers, and site auditors in one place.

The headline features are competitor research and backlink analysis. Free Google tools show your own site; Ahrefs and Semrush estimate almost any site's keywords and links. They also score keyword difficulty and estimate search volume, though every third-party volume is a modeled estimate, not Google's exact data.

For one small site publishing a few pages a month, that extra reach is often more than you will ever use.

What do Ahrefs and Semrush cost?

Ahrefs and Semrush both start well above the price of a free tool, and the gap widens fast at the top tiers.

Tool Entry plan Top self-serve plan Free option
Ahrefs ~US$29/mo, Starter (roughly RM140) ~US$449/mo, Advanced (roughly RM2,100) Webmaster Tools, for a site you own
Semrush ~US$139/mo, SEO (roughly RM650) ~US$549/mo, Advanced (roughly RM2,600) Limited free account

Put that in yearly terms. A US$139-a-month plan is about RM7,800 a year (illustrative arithmetic, not a client result). For a business publishing two articles a month, free Search Console data usually answers the same questions that subscription would.

When is a paid tool worth it?

A paid tool is worth it once your SEO work outgrows what free tools show. That happens when you publish at volume, manage several sites or clients, or compete in a crowded niche where you must study rivals closely.

A pattern we see is clients expecting a tool to do the ranking work, then underestimating how much the actual publishing takes. We think most small sites overspend on tools and underspend on publishing. The tool does not rank you; the pages you publish and the mentions you earn do. A subscription is a magnifying glass, useful only once there is enough work to look at.

Start with keyword research in the free tools. Add a paid tool when a specific question, like a competitor's backlink sources, keeps going unanswered.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do SEO with only free tools?

Yes, especially for a small site. Google Search Console, Keyword Planner, and Trends cover keyword research, rank checking, and indexing between them. Most local businesses can run months or years of solid SEO before a paid tool would tell them anything new. Publishing useful pages matters far more than the tool you track them with.

Is there a free version of Ahrefs or Semrush?

Partly. Ahrefs offers free Webmaster Tools, which gives a site audit and limited data for a website you own and verify. Semrush has a limited free account with a capped number of daily lookups. Neither free tier matches the paid plans, but both are enough to try the interface and check your own site.

Do paid SEO tools make you rank higher?

No. A tool reports data and finds opportunities; it does not change your rankings by itself. Ranking still comes from useful content, a fast site, and credible mentions. A paid tool can point you at the right work sooner, but the work is the same with it or without it.

Which is better, Ahrefs or Semrush?

Both are strong, and neither is clearly better for a small business. Ahrefs is known for its backlink data; Semrush bundles more marketing features. If you only need one, pick by the single job you most need, and use the free trial or free tier first. For most small sites, the choice matters less than whether you will actually use it.

Do I need a paid tool for AI visibility?

Not to start. Getting mentioned by AI engines depends on clear content, credible third-party mentions, and letting the right crawlers in, none of which needs a paid subscription. Some paid tools now track AI citations, which helps at scale, but a small business should fix its content and mentions first.

What is the best free keyword tool?

There is no single best one; the free Google tools work together. Keyword Planner gives volume ranges, Trends shows what is rising, and Search Console reveals the terms you already rank for. Used together, they cover most of what a small business needs to plan its content.

Getting more from your SEO budget

Storming Solutions runs SEO, AEO, and GEO for Malaysian businesses from Kuala Lumpur. We use paid tools where they earn their keep, but we spend most of a client's budget on the work that actually moves rankings: publishing and earning mentions. We would rather grow your pages than your software bill.
