How to Switch SEO Agencies Without Losing Progress

Updated 23 September 2026

Jump to section

You can switch SEO agencies without losing progress, as long as you own the accounts and the work before you leave. The real risk is not the switch itself. It is a departing agency that holds your Search Console, your domain, your content, or your Google Business Profile. Confirm ownership first, get a clean handover, then move. Your rankings live on your site and your profile, not in the old agency's tools.

Why do businesses lose rankings when they switch?

Businesses lose rankings when the value was sitting inside the old agency's accounts, not their own. Nothing about changing providers hurts rankings by itself.

The damage comes from two places. One is ownership: the domain, hosting, Google Analytics, Search Console, or profile was registered under the agency, so it walks out the door with them.

The other is disruption. A new team that rips up the site, changes URLs, and rewrites everything in week one can undo months of trust while it finds its feet.

The mistake we see most often is a business discovering, at the exit, that it never held the keys. Sort ownership before you give notice, and a switch is routine.

What must you own before you leave?

You must own five things before you leave: the domain, the hosting, the analytics, the Search Console property, and the content. These are the assets rankings are built on.

Asset What to confirm Why it matters
Domain name Registered in your name, you hold the login Losing it can take your whole site offline
Hosting Account and billing are yours Your pages and email live here
Analytics and Search Console You are the owner, not a delegated user The performance history is yours to keep
Google Business Profile Lives in your Google account Reviews and local ranking history stay with you
Content and pages You have the files, and rights to them The published work keeps earning after the switch

The one to check hardest is Search Console. During any audit, Google's guidance on hiring an SEO, last updated June 2026, says to "only grant read access" and hold back write access. If a past agency made itself the sole verified owner, reclaim that first.

In one case we saw, a previous provider refused to transfer a client's domain and Google account even after a police report. That is the trap ownership prevents. Who should hold each account is spelled out in what to ask before signing an SEO quote.

How do you hand over cleanly?

A clean handover means the old agency leaves you the accounts, the work, and a record of what was done, with nothing switched off on the way out. Ask for it in writing before the final invoice clears.

Request four things.

Owner-level access to every account transferred to you. An export of the content, pages, and any custom work. A short document of what was changed and why, especially redirects. And a promise, in writing, that live pages and redirects stay in place.

Keep the old 301 redirects alive. They pass ranking to the right URLs, and removing them is a quiet way to lose traffic during a move.

What should the new agency do first?

The new agency should audit and baseline before it changes anything, not rebuild in week one. A careful first month protects the progress you are trying to keep.

Grant the new team read access to Search Console for the audit, the same standard Google advises, and upgrade them only once you trust them. A good agency spends the first weeks measuring where you stand in the numbers that show SEO is working, then proposes changes in order of impact.

Change one big thing at a time. A site migration and an agency switch in the same month makes any ranking dip impossible to diagnose.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose my Google rankings if I change agencies?

Not if you own your assets. Rankings live on your website and your Google Business Profile, both of which stay with you when the domain, hosting, and profile are in your name. You lose rankings only when an account walks out with the old agency, or when the new team makes sweeping changes too fast. Confirm ownership before you give notice, and the switch is safe.

Should I tell my current agency I am leaving before I get access?

Confirm your ownership quietly first, then give notice. You are not doing anything underhand: these are your accounts and your business assets.

But relationships can sour at the exit. So check that the domain, Search Console, and profile are in your name before the conversation, not after. Then hand over professionally.

How long before the new agency shows results?

Usually a month or two to baseline and stabilize, then improvement builds from there. A switch does not reset the clock to zero, because the site keeps the authority it already earned. Expect the first weeks to be audit and cleanup, not fireworks. If the new agency promises instant gains from a switch, treat that the way you would any agency that overpromises.

Can I switch during a website redesign?

You can, but do not run both at once. A redesign changes URLs and structure, an agency change changes who watches the numbers, and doing both together makes any drop impossible to trace. Finish one, let it settle, then start the other. If a redesign is already underway, keep the current agency through launch, then switch.

What if my old agency owns my domain and will not release it?

Push for a written transfer first, and escalate through the registrar if needed.

A .my domain is administered through MYNIC, the .my registry, and a .com through its registrar. Those are your escalation points when a third party withholds your domain.

This is exactly the lockout that owning your accounts from day one avoids, which is why we check it before any other work.

Making the switch without the setback
