What Should You Ask Before Signing an SEO Quote?

Updated 5 August 2026

Jump to section

Before signing an SEO quote, get five things written into the document: the named monthly deliverables, who owns the accounts and content, how results get reported, the exit terms, and who does the work. Two quotes at the same monthly fee can buy completely different products. One buys four content pages and shipped fixes; the other buys "ongoing optimization" nobody can inspect. The document decides which you get.

Take each question to the meeting and hold the answer to a standard:

Question A good answer names Red flag
What does the fee buy monthly? Pages, fixes, links — counted "Ongoing SEO activities"
Who owns accounts and content? You hold Search Console, Analytics, CMS, copyright The provider holds the logins
How are results reported? Named metrics, named tool, a fixed date Screenshots you cannot verify
What are the exit terms? Notice period plus a handover list "We'll sort that out later"
Who does the work? The people in your account The people in the pitch

What should the scope section actually name?

The scope section should name quantities and objects, not activities. That means how many pages or articles a month, which audit problems get fixed and by when, what link work looks like and at what pace, and which existing pages get rewritten.

Malaysian retainers vary widely in what they include at similar prices. That is why what SEO costs in Malaysia matters less than what your specific fee buys.

A quick test settles it in the meeting. Ask what last month's deliverables were for an existing client, anonymized. A provider doing real monthly work answers instantly.

Who should own the accounts and the content?

The business should own every account the engagement touches, and the quote should say so. Search Console and GA4 live under your Google account, with the provider added as a user.

The CMS admin belongs to you. Copyright on articles written for your site transfers to you on payment.

This is the same principle covered in who should own your domain, hosting, and email, applied to the search layer. It bites hardest when a business leaves a provider and finds the content was published on a domain the provider controls. The traffic then walks out with the contract.

What does honest reporting look like?

Honest reporting names evidence you can open yourself. The monthly report should point at numbers in your own Search Console: impressions, clicks, indexed pages, position movements. It should sit next to what shipped that month against the scope list.

Activity counts with no evidence trail are the classic filler of a hollow retainer. "50 directory submissions" and "100 backlinks created" prove nothing you can check.

In our experience owners treat page one like a one-time purchase, so a quote that sells activity instead of compounding output can feel reassuring while delivering little. Expect leading indicators early rather than revenue; the honest shape of that curve runs six to twelve months, as why SEO agencies ask for a six-month minimum explains.

What belongs in the exit terms?

Exit terms should state the notice period and list what you receive on the way out. That list covers content files, access handovers, a record of technical changes, and any disavow or link files. The quote is where you negotiate this, because the day you leave is too late to ask.

Read any guarantee clause with real skepticism too. Google's own guidance for hiring an SEO says no one can promise a #1 ranking, and lists a guaranteed ranking as a warning sign (Do I need an SEO?, Google Search Central, updated June 2026). Every "guaranteed position" is one of a few familiar tricks, dissected in why nobody can promise you #1 on Google.

Frequently asked questions

What if a provider will only describe the scope as "ongoing activities"?

Price it as unverifiable and push back before signing. A scope you cannot inspect is one you cannot dispute later. Ask for the same work stated as counted objects, with dates attached. A provider selling a real service names last month's output without hesitation.

Should an SEO quote guarantee a #1 ranking on Google?

No. Google states that no one can guarantee a number-one ranking and flags any such promise as a warning sign (Do I need an SEO?, Google Search Central). Rankings depend on the whole competitive field, which no agency controls. A guarantee inside a quote is a reason to stop reading.

Who should hold my Google Search Console access during the work?

You should own the property, with the provider added as a user you can remove. Google's hiring guidance recommends granting only the access an audit needs rather than handing over the account. That keeps your historical data and the login with the business, so changing provider never means restarting the measurement record.

How long should an SEO commitment run?

Around six to twelve months is the published Malaysian norm, and it reflects how long the work takes to compound. Judge the commitment by the deliverables inside it, not the duration alone; why agencies ask for six months covers the mechanism. A long term attached to a vague scope is the combination to avoid.

Can I ask to see a real client's monthly report before I sign?

Yes, anonymized. A provider running genuine monthly work can show a redacted report in minutes. Reading one tells you more than any pitch deck. If the request meets reasons it cannot be done, treat that as the answer about what the reports actually contain.

Send the vague quote back for one more draft

Storming Solutions writes its own SEO, AEO, and GEO retainers from Kuala Lumpur with the deliverables listed line by line, because we would not sign the vague version either. Choosing the provider behind the quote is a wider judgment, covered in how to choose a reliable digital agency.
