Funnel Builders vs a Real Website: What Your Business Needs

Updated 13 October 2026

Jump to section

Build the website first, then add a funnel for a specific campaign. A funnel builder like ClickFunnels or Systeme.io creates a focused path to one action, a sales page that leads into a checkout. A website is your discoverable, owned home that ranks in Google and holds everything. For most Malaysian SMEs, a funnel is a tool inside your marketing, not a replacement for the site.

Funnel builder or website: the quick verdict

A funnel builder and a website are not either/or. Treating them as rivals is where the confusion starts.

One drives a single action. The other is your whole presence.

Funnel builder Your own website
Its job One path to one action Your whole presence
Where pages live The vendor's platform A domain you own
Cost model Monthly subscription, ongoing Build once, then hosting
Found in search Only the funnel, barely Yes, every page
Who owns it The platform You

What a funnel builder actually is

A funnel builder is software for building sales funnels, a short sequence of pages aimed at one conversion.

ClickFunnels sells itself as software to "convert your online visitors into paying customers". Systeme.io calls itself "the only tool you need to launch your online business".

Under the hood, a funnel is made of landing pages wired together: a sales page, an order form, an upsell, a thank-you page. Each page pushes the visitor one step closer to buying.

That focus is the point, and it is also the limit. A funnel is built to convert traffic you already send it, not to be found. Nobody discovers your funnel by searching Google for what you sell. ClickFunnels also hosts websites and blogs, but they still run on its platform and its plan.

The catch: you rent it, every month

A funnel builder is a subscription, so the cost never stops.

ClickFunnels runs from US$97 a month on its Launch plan, about RM400 a month or roughly RM4,800 a year. Higher tiers reach US$297 a month, with a top annual-only plan above that, and there is no free plan (ClickFunnels pricing, October 2026).

Systeme.io keeps a free plan of up to 2,000 contacts and three funnels, and charges once you need more (Systeme.io pricing, October 2026).

Run one campaign a year, and an entry plan still costs about US$97 every month. That is roughly RM4,800 across the year, whether the campaign is live or not (illustrative arithmetic, not a client result).

A website you build once keeps working between campaigns for the price of hosting.

In our experience, owners underestimate the running cost of a rented tool. A monthly funnel subscription is easy to start and easy to forget you are still paying, long after the launch it was bought for.

You can connect a custom domain, but the pages still run on the vendor's servers. The build-once versus subscription question decides more than price here. It decides who holds your pages.

What a website gives you that a funnel does not

A website gives you three things a funnel cannot: search visibility, depth, and ownership.

Retrieval engines rank and cite pages on a domain they can crawl, and a single funnel page offers almost nothing to index. That is why a funnel-only business stays invisible between campaigns.

The moment the ads stop, so does the traffic. There is no discoverable site underneath earning visits on its own.

A real site also holds what a funnel omits: your full range, your story, proof, and the pages that build trust before anyone buys. Selling online with a catalog or checkout is a website's job, not a funnel's, as covered in website versus marketplace.

Do you need both?

Most businesses are best served by both, used for what each does well.

The website is the home that gets found and builds trust. A funnel is a focused campaign you point paid traffic at, for a launch or a promotion.

Build the site first, so you exist in search and own your presence. Add a funnel or a dedicated campaign landing page when you have a specific offer to push. The catalog-versus-website trade-off works the same way: a focused tool, sitting alongside the owned home, never instead of it.

When a funnel builder on its own makes sense

A funnel builder alone can be the right call for a narrow business model. If you sell one info-product, one course, or one time-boxed launch, and every visitor arrives from ads, a funnel matches that shape closely.

Even then, own your domain, and know that the funnel is rented. If the plan is to grow past a single offer, a website is what you grow into, the case made in whether your business needs a website.

Frequently asked questions

Does a funnel builder cost less than a website?

Not over time. A funnel builder is a monthly subscription that runs from about US$97 a month on ClickFunnels, roughly RM4,800 a year, every year. A website costs more to build once, then only hosting after that. The subscription looks smaller month to month, but it never stops, while a built site keeps working between campaigns.

Can a funnel builder replace my website?

No, not for most businesses. A funnel is built to convert traffic you send it, not to be found in search. It holds a few pages aimed at one action, with no depth, no discoverability, and no ownership of the address. As a whole web presence, it leaves you invisible the moment your ads pause.

Do funnel pages show up in Google?

Barely. A funnel is a handful of thin pages built for conversion, not for search, and they usually sit on the platform's hosting. Search engines and AI tools rank pages by the content and structure they can crawl, and a funnel gives them very little. Discovery is a website's job, not a funnel's.

Can I use my own domain with ClickFunnels or Systeme.io?

Yes, both let you connect a custom domain. That makes the address look like yours, but the pages still run on the vendor's platform and depend on the subscription. Pointing your domain at a funnel does not make you the owner of the site. Stop paying, and what stays live is up to the vendor's terms.

What is the difference between a funnel and a landing page?

A landing page is a single page built for one action; a funnel is several such pages wired into a sequence. A funnel builder is the software that makes and hosts them. A landing page can live on your own website too, which keeps it discoverable and owned, unlike a funnel locked to a subscription platform.

Should a small Malaysian business start with a funnel or a website?

Start with the website. It gets you found in Google and AI, builds trust with strangers, and is an asset you own. Add a funnel later when you have a specific campaign to run. Beginning with a funnel alone means paying monthly to stay invisible in search, which is the opposite of what a new business needs.

Where a funnel fits, and where a home has to be

Storming Solutions builds and maintains websites for Malaysian businesses, from Kuala Lumpur, and runs SEO, AEO, and GEO so those sites earn visits on their own. We use funnels and landing pages where a campaign calls for one. We just will not sell a rented funnel as a substitute for a site you own.
