What Is Zero-Click Search?

Updated 7 September 2026

Jump to section

A zero-click search is a search that ends without the user clicking any result. The answer sits on the results page itself, inside an AI Overview, a featured snippet, a map pack, or a knowledge panel, so the searcher reads it and moves on. In 2024, 58.5% of United States Google searches and 59.7% in the European Union ended in zero clicks (SparkToro, July 2024). For a business, it changes what a top ranking is actually worth.

Zero-click searches happen when Google can answer the query on the results page, so the user never needs to visit a site. Several features do this, each lifting an answer out of a page and showing it in place.

Result feature What it answers on the page
AI Overview A generated summary of the whole query
Featured snippet A quoted answer pulled from a ranking page
Local pack A map with three businesses to call or route to
Knowledge panel Facts about a place, person, or company
Instant answer Weather, currency, scores, simple sums

The page still supplied the answer in most cases. It just did not always earn the visit. The difference between an AI Overview and a featured snippet matters less than the shared result: no click.

Zero-click is now the majority of searches, not a fringe case. SparkToro's 2024 study built on clickstream data from Datos. It found that for every 1,000 US Google searches, only about 360 clicks reached the open web, and roughly 30% of clicks went to Google's own properties. AI answers push the same way: Pew Research found that when an AI summary appears, users click a result on 8% of visits, against 15% without one.

Both figures come from US and EU panels, and Malaysia has no equivalent public study. The direction is what travels here.

As AI Overviews spread, the results page answers more and refers less.

Does zero-click search hurt your business?

Not always, and treating every zero-click as a lost customer misreads it. Many of those searches were never going to convert: someone checking your opening hours or phone number got what they needed, which is good service.

The real shift is on comparison and buying queries, where being the answer, not just a blue link, now decides whether you are seen.

A pattern we see is owners judging their site by clicks alone, then worrying when clicks flatten while impressions keep rising. In a zero-click world, an impression where you were the quoted answer still did a job. That is the move from ranking to being cited, the heart of answer engine optimization.

Picture 1,000 people searching your opening hours: most read the answer in the box and never click, and that is fine. Now picture 100 searching "SME accountant Petaling Jaya": they still click to compare, and being the cited, trusted name is what puts you on the shortlist. (Illustrative scenario, not a client result.)

How do you win in a zero-click world?

You win by being the source an answer is built from, and by capturing the searches that still click. The practical moves:

  • Write answer-first content, so your page is the easiest to quote.
  • Keep passages short and factual, the shape an AI Overview or snippet lifts.
  • Complete your Google Business Profile, which feeds the local pack.
  • Measure AI visibility and impressions, not clicks alone.

None of that is new SEO. It is the same crawlable, clear, useful page, aimed at a results page that increasingly answers for you.

Frequently asked questions

Is zero-click search the same as an AI Overview?

No. An AI Overview is one cause of zero-click search, not the whole thing. Featured snippets, the local map pack, knowledge panels, and direct answers like weather all end searches without a click too. AI Overviews are simply the fastest-growing cause. Zero-click is the outcome; those features are the mechanisms.

Does zero-click search mean SEO is dead?

No. It means the goal is shifting from earning the click to being the answer. Pages still have to rank and be crawlable to be quoted in an AI Overview or snippet at all. What changes is measurement: you track being cited and impressions, not clicks alone. Strong SEO is still the groundwork.

How much search is zero-click?

Most of it, by the best available data. SparkToro's 2024 study found 58.5% of US and 59.7% of EU Google searches ended without a click. Those are US and EU figures, and Malaysia has no public equivalent, but the same AI answers and on-page features apply here. Assume a large share of your impressions never convert to a click.

Is a zero-click impression worthless?

No. When your site is the source quoted in an answer, that impression builds recognition even without a visit. Familiarity and trust compound, so the next time that person has a paid need, you are already a name they know. This is why measuring AI visibility matters beyond click counts.

How do I see my zero-click visibility?

Google Search Console shows impressions and average position, so you can see where you appear even without clicks, and it now separates AI-surface performance. Rising impressions with flat clicks is often a zero-click pattern, not a failure. Read it alongside the wider view in whether your SEO is working.

Can I stop my content appearing in zero-click answers?

Technically yes, but it usually backfires. A nosnippet tag removes you from AI Overviews and featured snippets, but it also strips the summary that draws attention on the results page. For almost every business, being the visible, cited answer beats being invisible. Being quoted is the new shop window.
