AI Overviews vs Featured Snippets: What Changed?
Updated 4 September 2026

A featured snippet and an AI Overview both sit above the classic blue links, but they are built differently. A featured snippet lifts one exact passage from a single top-ranking page and links to it. An AI Overview generates a summary from several pages and links to all of them. The verdict for a business owner: you cannot mark up or pay for either, so you earn both by being the clearest answer on the page.
The panic that AI Overviews are a brand-new game is mostly misplaced. The winning move is the one that already won featured snippets: answer the question plainly, near the top.
How do featured snippets and AI Overviews compare?
They differ in how many pages they draw from and how the answer is assembled, but both are decided by Google and neither takes special markup. The table sets out what actually separates them.
| Featured snippet | AI Overview | |
|---|---|---|
| Source | One top-ranking page, quoted | Several pages, synthesized |
| The answer | A verbatim extract from your page | An AI-generated summary |
| Links out to | One page (yours) | Several supporting pages |
| How you get in | Rank well, answer clearly, no markup | Be eligible for Search, no markup |
| Who decides | Google's systems | Google's systems |

A featured snippet is, in Google's words, a box where "the format of a regular search result is reversed, showing the descriptive snippet first." It quotes one page. An AI Overview, Google says, is a generated answer offering "a jumping off point to explore links to learn more." It is drawn from more than one source.
What carries over from snippets to AI Overviews?
The core skill is identical: give a clear, self-contained answer that a machine can lift. Both features reward a page that states the answer plainly and high up, then supports it.
Neither can be forced with code. On featured snippets Google is blunt: asked how to mark a page as one, its documentation answers "You can't. Google systems determine whether a page would make a good featured snippet." AI Overviews work the same way.
For AI Overviews, Google states there are "no additional requirements to appear." It adds that no "machine readable files, AI text files, or markup" are needed. The same content that earns a snippet feeds an Overview.
This is why answer engine optimization is not a separate trick bolted onto SEO. A page written to answer a real question, matched to search intent, is what both a snippet and an Overview reward.
What actually changed with AI Overviews?
The big change is reach and structure: an AI Overview blends several sources into one answer and appears far more often than snippets ever did. That reshapes how a searcher meets your page.
AI Overviews now appear on a large share of searches. One study of 100,000 keywords found a Google AI Overview on 59.73% of tracked searches as of February 2026, more than double the rate a year earlier (SE Ranking). A featured snippet, by contrast, shows on a much narrower set of queries.
The second change is attribution. A featured snippet sends its click to one page, yours if you own it. An AI Overview cites several pages, so the visibility is shared, and being one of several cited sources is the realistic goal.
The third change is the zero-click risk. Because an Overview answers more completely, a searcher may not click at all.
That makes being the cited source, and being named in the answer, matter more than a raw ranking position. How engines pick those sources is covered in how AI engines choose citations.
Can you optimize for either directly?
No, not directly, and any tool promising to "get you into" the AI box is selling a slot that does not exist. You influence both by earning them, never by declaring them.
The levers are the same as strong SEO. Answer the question in the first sentence of the relevant section. Structure the page so one passage stands alone, keep it accurate, and rank well enough to be in contention, since quality is what actually ranks. Schema markup can help Google understand a page, but it does not buy a snippet or an Overview.
In our experience, owners ask how to "get into" the AI box as if it were a paid placement. It is not, and neither was the featured snippet. The businesses that win both are the ones that answer their customers' real questions better than anyone else on the page.
When does the difference actually matter to you?
For most SME pages, the honest answer is that you write the same way for both, so the distinction is strategic, not tactical. Chasing snippets and chasing Overviews is the same work.
It matters most when you measure. If you track a featured snippet win as guaranteed traffic, an AI Overview breaks that assumption, because it may satisfy the searcher without a click. Judge success by whether you are cited and named, not only by whether you hold position one.
It also matters for expectation-setting. A featured snippet felt like a prize you could win outright. An AI Overview is a shared citation, so the goal shifts from owning the answer to being trusted enough to be part of it.
Frequently asked questions
Are AI Overviews replacing featured snippets?
Not entirely, but they are taking over the space above the results for many queries. AI Overviews now appear on a majority of tracked searches, while featured snippets still show on narrower, answer-shaped queries. Both can appear for different searches. The safer read is that the same page which earned a snippet is now competing to be cited in an Overview, so the work is unchanged.
Can I optimize my page for AI Overviews?
Not with any special file or markup. Google states plainly that there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews," and no AI text files or markup are needed. You earn a place the same way you earn a featured snippet: rank well, answer the question clearly, and stay accurate. There is no setting, tag, or payment that puts you in the box.
Do featured snippets still exist in 2026?
Yes. Featured snippets are still a live Search feature, drawn from a single top-ranking page and linking to it. They tend to show for direct, answer-shaped questions. What has changed is that an AI Overview now often sits above them, so a snippet is no longer the only summary a searcher sees first.
Which sends more traffic, a snippet or an AI Overview?
A featured snippet usually sends more click traffic to a single page, because it links to one source, yours. An AI Overview spreads visibility across several cited pages and can answer the query without a click. So a snippet is better for direct traffic, while an Overview is better for reach and being seen as a trusted source. Neither is something you can buy.
Does schema markup get me into an AI Overview?
No. Google is explicit that no markup or machine-readable file is required or sufficient to appear in AI Overviews. Schema markup helps Google understand your page and can earn other rich results, but it does not place you in an Overview. Clear, accurate, well-ranked content is what gets cited, with or without schema.
