WhatsApp Business Catalog vs a Website: Which Do You Need?

Updated 13 October 2026

Jump to section

Most Malaysian businesses need both, not one or the other. A WhatsApp Business catalog is a free product menu that sits inside your chat profile, made for customers already messaging you. A website is the discoverable, owned home that Google and AI engines can find and cite. The catalog closes conversations; the website starts them, because search cannot see a catalog at all.

The quick verdict, side by side

A WhatsApp catalog and a website solve different halves of the same job. The catalog handles the chat you already have. The website handles the customer you have not met yet.

Does a WhatsApp catalog count as a website?

No. A WhatsApp catalog is a feature inside the WhatsApp Business app, not a site of your own. A business can "create a catalog to share their products and services with customers," in WhatsApp's own words (WhatsApp).

That catalog, WhatsApp adds, "is displayed on its business profile". Each listing needs a title, at least one photo, and a country of origin. You can add up to ten images or videos per item (WhatsApp Help Center, October 2026).

It is a tidy in-chat menu, and that is all it is built to be.

The catalog has no address of its own. It lives on your business profile in the app, so a customer must already be in WhatsApp to see it. Shareable catalog links point back to WhatsApp, not to a page you own.

What a website does that a catalog cannot

A website earns you two things a catalog never will: discovery and ownership. Google and AI engines rank and cite pages they can crawl on a domain, and a catalog locked inside an app gives them nothing to read.

Search engines and AI answer engines score public web pages, so anything sealed inside an app is invisible to them by design. That is the gap that keeps a WhatsApp-only business off the map.

The pull is real, because so many Malaysian buyers already message businesses on WhatsApp, which makes the catalog a strong closing tool here. It just cannot bring you anyone new.

In our experience, the ownership question is the one that catches owners off guard. The catalog, and every chat inside it, sits on terms Meta sets, not terms you set. It is the same ownership gap that runs through whether a Facebook page is enough and whether a link-in-bio page is enough.

Use the catalog and the website together

The strongest setup uses both, each for its own job. Keep the WhatsApp catalog for the buyer who is already in a chat with you. Send everyone else to your website for search, credibility, and the pages a catalog cannot hold.

A WhatsApp button on your website closes the loop. A stranger finds your site in Google, reads enough to trust you, then taps through to a chat where your catalog does the selling.

When a catalog on its own is enough

A WhatsApp catalog alone can be enough in one case: a very small or new seller running entirely on referrals and repeat chats. If every customer already has your number, and nobody needs to find you through search, the catalog covers it.

That changes the day you want to be discovered. A business that needs new customers to find it, compare it, and trust it before messaging needs a real site, the kind worked through in whether your business needs a website.

Frequently asked questions

Can people find my WhatsApp catalog on Google?

No. Your catalog sits inside the WhatsApp Business app on your profile, not on a web page Google can crawl. Search engines and AI tools index public pages on domains, so a catalog stays invisible to them. To be found in search, you need content on a website you own. The catalog is for people already in a chat with you.

Is the WhatsApp Business catalog free?

Yes. The WhatsApp Business app is free to download, and building a catalog inside it costs nothing. WhatsApp built the app "with the small business owner in mind" (WhatsApp). You only pay if you add paid extras, such as ads or marketing messages, or move to the WhatsApp Business Platform. For a simple product menu shared in chat, there is no fee.

How many products can I list in a WhatsApp catalog?

WhatsApp does not publish a fixed maximum on its own help pages, so treat very large claimed limits with care. Each item needs a title, at least one image, and a country of origin, and up to ten images or videos per product. For a big or fast-changing range, a website handles the volume and the updates far better.

Does a WhatsApp catalog replace an online store?

No. A catalog lets buyers browse and send you a cart as a message, but it takes no payment on a page you own. There is no search visibility, and no pages you own. To sell online with payment, you need a website or store, weighed up in website versus marketplace. The catalog is a menu, not a shop.

Can I use my own domain with a WhatsApp catalog?

No. The catalog lives on your WhatsApp business profile, and any shareable link points back to WhatsApp, not to a domain you own. That is the core limit: you cannot put your own address on it. Owning your address is one of the main reasons to keep a website alongside the catalog.

Build the home your catalog points to

Storming Solutions builds and maintains websites for Malaysian businesses, out of Kuala Lumpur, and runs SEO, AEO, and GEO so those sites get found. We like WhatsApp catalogs, and we will not pretend one does a website's job, because search engines cannot see inside an app.
