What Should a Monthly SEO Report Include?

Updated 22 September 2026

Jump to section

A monthly SEO report should include five things: the work actually done, movement in Search Console, movement in analytics, your AI-search visibility, and a plain plan for next month. The numbers come from free Google tools, so every figure is one you can open and check. A good report reads like a receipt tied to a plan. If it is all rising charts and no work you can click, that is the warning sign.

What work was done this month?

The first section lists the concrete work delivered, so you can match hours to output. A vague report skips this, and its absence is the clearest sign an agency is coasting.

It should name the pages published or rewritten, the technical fixes made, the profile and citation updates, and any schema added. Each item should be something you can verify. Open the new page, run a speed test, check the Google Business Profile.

A pattern we repeatedly see is that the reports clients trust most are the ones where every claimed task has an artifact behind it.

Which numbers show search performance?

The search-performance numbers come straight from Google Search Console, which is free and definitive for how you appear in Google. Four figures carry most of the meaning.

Search Console defines them plainly. An impression is "how often someone saw a link to your site on Google". A click is how often someone clicked through.

Click-through rate is clicks divided by impressions. Average position is a relative ranking where 1 is the top (Search Console Help, retrieved August 2026).

Metric What it tells you Healthy direction
Impressions How often you appeared in results Rising over months
Clicks How often people came to your site Rising with impressions
Click-through rate How compelling your result looked Steady or rising
Average position Where you rank, on average Falling toward 1

Read them together, not alone. Impressions up but clicks flat means you appear without being chosen, usually a titles problem. Position improving on the terms that matter is the signal to trust.

The order they move in is covered in how to tell if your SEO is working.

What should the analytics section show?

The analytics section shows what visitors did after arriving, drawn from Google Analytics 4. Traffic with no outcome is a vanity number.

Report organic-search sessions, the engagement they produced, and the key events that matter to the business: a form submit, a call, a WhatsApp click. In GA4 the "Organic Search" channel now includes arrivals from Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. So that line already blends classic and AI-driven search.

The number to anchor on is conversions, because ten well-matched visitors who inquire beat a thousand who bounce.

Should the report cover AI visibility yet?

Yes, an SEO report in 2026 should carry a short AI-visibility line, because a growing share of searches never reach a blue link. Google now offers a dedicated view for this.

Its Search Console generative-AI performance report launched on 3 June 2026. It separates out your impressions inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, though it currently shows impressions and pages only, with no clicks or query data yet. Pair it with a manual check of how ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity answer questions about your business.

The full method is in how to measure AI visibility.

What makes a report honest instead of decorative?

An honest report names what did not work and what comes next, not just what rose. A decorative one cherry-picks the up-and-to-the-right charts.

Look for three things.

A metric that fell, with a reason. A clear plan for next month. And figures you can reproduce from your own Search Console login. We would rather tell a client that a page underperformed and why than bury it, because the point of the report is decisions, not applause.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a monthly SEO report be?

Short. Two to four pages, or one screen, is plenty for most SMEs. The value is in the few numbers that drive a decision and the plan attached to them, not in length. A forty-page automated export padded with every metric a tool can print is usually hiding the absence of real work behind volume. Ask for the one-page version a busy owner can read and act on.

Can I check these numbers without paying for a tool?

Yes. Every core figure comes from two free Google tools: Search Console for how you appear, and Google Analytics 4 for what visitors do next. You do not need a paid platform to verify an agency's report. Paid tools add competitor and keyword tracking, but the honesty check, does the report match my own logins, costs nothing.

What is the single most important number?

Conversions, not rankings. A number-one position that produces no inquiries is worth less than a number-five position that fills your calendar. Rankings and traffic are means; leads, calls, and sales are the end. A report that leads with conversions and ties the SEO work to them is thinking about your business, not just its own dashboard.

Why does my report show AI traffic as "direct"?

Because many AI engines strip the referrer, so the visit arrives with no source attached and analytics files it under "direct". This is a known limitation, not an error in the report. It is why the AI-visibility section leans on Search Console and manual checks rather than the analytics channel alone. A good report explains the gap instead of quietly inflating "direct".

Should the report guarantee my rankings will rise?

No. No honest report guarantees a ranking, because Google's own guidance calls a guaranteed number-one position a warning sign. A report should show trend and direction, set against a realistic timeline, not promise a position. If your provider's report guarantees rankings, read what to ask before signing an SEO quote before you continue.
