What Is Product Schema (Price and Stock in Google)?

Updated 15 October 2026

Jump to section

Product schema is structured data you add to a product page so Google can read its price, stock, and ratings. Google supports two forms: merchant listings for pages where shoppers can buy, and product snippets for pages where they cannot. For a merchant listing, the required fields are the product name, an image, and an offer with a price and currency. Adding it makes a page eligible for richer results, never guaranteed, and it is not a ranking boost.

What product schema tells Google

Product schema hands Google a machine-readable copy of facts already visible on your product page: the name, an image, the price, the currency, and the stock status. Instead of guessing from your text, Google reads the fields directly.

That precision is what puts price, availability, and star ratings into the listing. Google says that with Product markup on your page, your information can appear "in richer ways in Google Search results", including Google Images and Lens.

This is schema markup applied to a product, and the definition it produces is what powers the price-and-stock line under a result.

For an online store, it is one of the highest-value technical steps you can take.

Merchant listings vs product snippets

Google splits Product markup into two experiences, and which one you use depends on whether people can buy on the page. Its overview page describes merchant listings as the markup for pages where customers can purchase products from you. Product snippets are for pages where shoppers cannot buy directly, such as a review or roundup.

Most Malaysian store owners want the merchant listing. That is the markup for a page where the shopper adds to cart and pays, and it belongs on the product page, not the category page.

The fields that matter: price, currency, and stock

A merchant listing requires three things on the product: a name, an image, and an offers block holding the price. Inside that offer, Google needs the price and the priceCurrency in three-letter ISO 4217 format, so MYR for ringgit.

Stock status is recommended, not required, but it is worth adding. Google's list of product availability values includes InStock, OutOfStock, PreOrder, and SoldOut, and you specify the single one that fits.

In our experience, the markup and the visible page drift apart over time. A price changes on screen during a sale but not in the code, and mismatched markup is a common reason stars or prices stop showing.

Eligible, not guaranteed, and not a ranking boost

Valid product schema earns eligibility, never a promise. Google states plainly that "Google does not guarantee that features that consume structured data will show up in search results".

It is also not a ranking signal on its own. Marking up a page does not push it higher; it makes the page eligible for a richer rich result if Google chooses to show one.

That is the same trap we flag in e-commerce SEO: schema controls how a listing can look, not where it ranks. The ranking still comes from the fundamentals.

Frequently asked questions

Does product schema improve my Google ranking?

No, not directly. Product structured data makes a page eligible for richer results like price, stock, and star ratings, but it is not a ranking factor. Google is explicit that it does not guarantee the features will even appear. The value is a listing that stands out and gives shoppers more reason to click, which can lift traffic. Your ranking still depends on content, speed, links, and trust.

What is the difference between a merchant listing and a product snippet?

A merchant listing is for pages where customers can buy the product from you, which is your own store's product page. A product snippet is for pages where they cannot buy directly, such as a review or comparison article. The markup differs slightly. A merchant listing needs a name, image, and an offer with price and currency. A product snippet needs a name plus a review, rating, or offer.

Do I need to code product schema by hand?

Usually not. Most store platforms add it for you. Shopify and WooCommerce output Product structured data automatically or through a plugin, so you rarely write JSON-LD yourself. Your job is to check it. Test a live product page in Google's Rich Results Test and confirm the price, currency, and stock in the markup match what shoppers see on the page.

What happens if my markup price differs from the visible price?

It can cost you the rich result. Google requires structured data to match the content visible on the page. A price in the markup that no longer matches the page is a common cause of stars or prices disappearing. Persistent mismatches can also trigger a manual action against structured data. Keep the markup and the visible page in sync, especially during sales.

Is product schema the same as Google Merchant Center?

No. Product schema is markup on your own product pages that Google reads while crawling. Google Merchant Center is a separate Google tool where you upload a product feed for free listings and Shopping ads. They complement each other: schema helps your organic pages show richer results, while Merchant Center places your products in Google's shopping surfaces. Google says providing both maximizes your eligibility.

Mark up what shoppers already see

Product schema is not a growth hack, it is good plumbing: give Google clean, accurate fields for price, stock, and ratings, and your listings can show more. Keep the markup honest and matched to the page, and it quietly earns clicks.
