Why Do SEO Agencies Ask for a 6-Month Minimum?

Updated 14 August 2026

Jump to section

SEO agencies ask for a six-month minimum because ranking compounds slowly, and a shorter contract ends before the compounding starts. Google has to recrawl and reindex your pages, new content needs weeks to gather impressions, and authority builds one article at a time. The term is also an industry norm in Malaysia: the pricing guides local agencies published in 2026 all state six-to-twelve-month horizons.

There is a second, less flattering reason the minimum exists. It protects the agency's revenue. Both reasons are real, and the way to tell which one you are signing is simple: look at what the contract commits to month by month.

A genuine six-month plan names its deliverables and its checkpoints. A lock-in names only the fee.

What actually happens in months one to six?

A competent SEO engagement in Malaysia follows a sequence, and each step feeds the next. The table below is the shape most retainers take, and the evidence you should be able to see for each stage in Google Search Console.

Phase What the agency does What you should see in Search Console
Month 1 Technical audit and fixes Fixes validated, corrected pages recrawled
Months 2–3 Content production New pages indexed, impressions starting to climb
Months 3–4 First movement Impression growth, early rankings on easier terms
Months 5–6 Compounding Internal links take hold, harder keywords begin to move

The curve bends upward late for a reason. Each new page that ranks passes internal authority to the others, so month six's articles lift month two's. That is why results arrive slowly and then all at once, rather than climbing in a straight line from day one.

The month-by-month detail of what the work contains, and what it should cost, is covered in the SEO in Malaysia guide and in how much SEO costs in Malaysia.

Is the six-month minimum an industry norm or a sales tactic?

The six-month minimum is both, and which one you are getting depends on the agency. As a norm, the pricing guides Malaysian agencies published in 2026 state it openly: six-month minimums with no lock-in afterward, and advice to plan six to twelve months so the work has runway to compound. One of those guides surveyed 21 Malaysian agencies and landed on the same range. We do not link competitor pricing pages, but the pattern takes one search to confirm.

As a tactic, the same clause lets a weak provider collect six retainers before you can judge the results. The distinguishing test is written deliverables. Ask what ships in month one, month two, and month three, and how each is reported.

An agency doing real work can answer from its process. An agency selling a lock-in answers with adjectives.

A fair minimum also writes down the ending: the notice period after month six, and exactly what you keep on exit.

What should you already see before month six?

Progress should be visible in your Google Search Console account from the first weeks. Technical fixes get marked as validated, new pages get indexed, impressions trend upward, and early keyword positions start to appear.

None of these are revenue yet, and an honest agency will say so. What they are is evidence the machine is turning.

A pattern we see repeatedly is clients expecting ranking movement in the first weeks. The honest month-two story is impression growth, and a provider that tells you so upfront is being straight with you.

A provider who reports nothing until month six is giving you the lock-in version of the contract. So is one who reports activity ("10 backlinks built") with no Search Console evidence behind it. If your site shows no movement at all by month three, the checklist in why a site doesn't show on Google is where we would start.

Does AI search change the six-month timeline?

AI search changes the six-month timeline only in part. Answer engines like ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews can quote a well-structured page on a specific question without waiting for it to outrank everyone else.

That is why answer engine optimization (AEO) sometimes shows citations earlier than classic rankings move. But those citations rest on the same foundations: crawlable pages, clear answers, and a site trustworthy enough to quote.

The six months build exactly that foundation. The relationship between the three disciplines, and the order to build them in, is mapped in SEO vs AEO vs GEO.

Frequently asked questions

Can I negotiate a shorter SEO contract?

Sometimes, but weigh what you give up. A few Malaysian providers run month-to-month instead of a six-month minimum, usually at a higher monthly fee to offset the risk of a short stay. A shorter term is reasonable if you want an exit ramp, but it does not speed up Google's crawling or indexing. You will still be judging early indicators, not rankings, in the first few months either way.

What happens after the six months end?

With a fair contract, you continue month-to-month, upgrade, downgrade, or leave, and a fair agency states that openly before you sign. The important clause to read before signing is the exit: the notice period, and what you keep. A good agreement leaves you with the content, the accounts, and the reporting history. A lock-in makes leaving expensive or takes the work with it.

Is a six-month minimum a red flag?

No. A six-month minimum on its own is normal and matches how ranking actually works. The red flag is a minimum term with no monthly deliverables written down. The term is only a problem when it commits you to a fee without committing the agency to specific, reported work. Read the deliverables list before you worry about the term length.

What should the monthly report show?

Search Console evidence, not activity counts. A useful report shows indexed pages, impression and click trends, keyword positions, and the specific work done that month, tied to what it changed. Reports that list tasks ("optimized 5 pages, built 10 links") without connecting them to measurable movement only prove the agency was busy.

Can AI search get me results faster than six months?

Sometimes, on narrow questions. A well-structured, answer-first page can be quoted by ChatGPT or Google's AI Overviews within weeks, before it climbs the blue-link rankings. That is a genuine early win, but it rests on the same crawlable, quotable foundation the six months are spent building. It is a faster lane on the same road, and the road still has to be built first.

Before you sign

Storming Solutions runs SEO, AEO, and GEO retainers as its core service line in Kuala Lumpur. Our own agreements use the same six-month horizon this page describes, with the deliverables written down and the exit written down too. The one thing you will not find in them is a ranking promise.

Before you commit to any minimum term, do one thing: ask for the month-by-month plan in writing, then hold each monthly report against it.
