What Is a Featured Snippet?

Updated 8 September 2026

Jump to section

A featured snippet is a box at the top of Google's results that answers a query directly by quoting one top-ranking page and linking to it. In Google's own words, it reverses the usual layout, showing "the descriptive snippet first". It sits in what people once called position zero, above the first ordinary link. You cannot mark up a page to become one; Google's systems choose it.

For a business, a featured snippet is free, prominent, and unbuyable. It goes to the page that answers the question most cleanly, not the one that pays the most.

A featured snippet reuses your page's own words in one of a few set shapes, matched to the question. The format depends on what the searcher seems to want.

Snippet type What it shows Typical query
Paragraph A short text answer "what is…"
List Ordered steps or a ranked set "how to…", "best…"
Table Rows of data "price of…", "X vs Y"

A single snippet can also appear inside a "People Also Ask" group, which Google calls a related-questions block. So the same clear answer can surface in more than one spot on the page.

You earn a featured snippet by ranking well and answering the question plainly; you cannot request one. Asked directly how to mark a page as a featured snippet, Google's documentation says: "You can't. Google systems determine whether a page would make a good featured snippet."

The practical levers are ordinary good writing. State the answer in the first sentence of the section that addresses it. Keep that passage self-contained, so it survives being quoted alone.

This is the same discipline behind answer engine optimization: a page that gives a clean, liftable answer is what both a snippet and an AI Overview reward, because quality is what actually ranks.

A featured snippet and an AI Overview both sit above the blue links, but they are built differently. A snippet quotes one page word for word. An Overview generates a summary from several pages and links to all of them.

Neither takes special markup, and both are decided by Google. The deeper comparison, including how attribution and clicks differ, lives in our guide to AI Overviews versus featured snippets.

You can block featured snippets with the same controls that govern all Google snippets. Add a nosnippet rule to stop Google showing any snippet text from the page, or wrap a specific passage in data-nosnippet to hide only that part.

A max-snippet limit set low can shorten snippets, but Google warns it "doesn't guarantee" a featured snippet disappears. For a guaranteed removal, nosnippet is the reliable choice. Most businesses want the visibility and never touch these, but the option exists.

Frequently asked questions

What is "position zero"?

Position zero is the informal name for the featured snippet slot, because it sits above the first organic result. The term stuck because a snippet can outrank the page listed at position one. It is not an official Google label, just shorthand for the answer box at the top.

Can you pay for a featured snippet?

No. There is no ad product, fee, or setting that places a page in a featured snippet. It is awarded by Google's systems to a page that already ranks and answers the query well. Any tool or agency promising to "buy" you the answer box is selling something that does not exist.

Why did I lose my featured snippet?

You usually lose a snippet because another page began answering the query more clearly, or because Google re-evaluated and picked a different source. An AI Overview appearing above the snippet can also cut its visibility. Snippets are never permanent; Google reassesses them constantly, so the fix is to keep the answer accurate and well-structured.

Do featured snippets still exist in 2026?

Yes. Featured snippets are still a live Google Search feature, drawn from a single top-ranking page. What changed is that an AI Overview now often sits above them, so a snippet is no longer the first summary a searcher sees on every query. Both can appear for different searches.

Does schema markup earn a featured snippet?

No. Schema markup helps Google understand your page and can earn separate rich results, but it does not create a featured snippet. Google selects snippets from a page's visible content, not from its structured data. Clear, well-ranked writing is what gets quoted.

Is a featured snippet good or bad for traffic?

It is usually good, though not always. A snippet gives prominent, free visibility and often draws the click, especially when the full answer needs context the box cannot fit. The risk is a query so simple that the snippet answers it completely and the searcher does not click, which is the same zero-click pattern AI Overviews create.

Earning the answer box

Storming Solutions runs SEO, AEO, and GEO for Malaysian businesses from Kuala Lumpur. A pattern we see is owners asking to "buy" the answer box, treating it like an ad slot; you cannot, any more than you can buy an organic ranking. We build pages to be the clearest answer instead.
