Does FAQ Schema Still Work?
Updated 28 September 2026

No, FAQ schema no longer earns a rich result in Google Search. Google removed the FAQ rich result on 7 May 2026, so FAQPage markup no longer produces the expandable question boxes it once did. The markup is still valid schema.org, and your visible FAQ content still helps readers and AI answer engines, but the markup itself now earns no Google search feature. Keep the FAQ on the page; drop the expectation of a rich result.
What changed, and when?
Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in Search on 7 May 2026. It added a deprecation notice to its documentation a day later (Google Search Central changelog, accessed September 2026).
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 7 May 2026 | FAQ rich results stop appearing in Google Search |
| 8 May 2026 | Deprecation notice added to the FAQ documentation |
| 15 June 2026 | Google removes the FAQ rich result documentation |

The paperwork followed the feature closely. Google removed the FAQ documentation on 15 June 2026, once the box was gone for good.
So this is not a temporary throttle or a limited rollout. FAQ rich results are gone from Google Search, and there is no signal Google plans to bring them back.
Does the markup still do anything?
FAQPage markup is still valid code, but it produces no visible feature in Google Search. Your structured data will pass the Schema Markup Validator, yet Google's Rich Results Test no longer lists FAQ as a supported type, so it detects nothing to show.
Google's removal notice says nothing about penalizing leftover markup. The code is a few lines of text on the page, so leaving it in place costs little.
It simply earns nothing from Google now. A clean validator result means correct code with no payoff, which is exactly the trap of chasing a single schema type for a search feature.
Should you remove the schema?
Removing FAQPage schema is optional, not urgent. The markup earns nothing, but Google has named no penalty for it, so there is no rush to strip it from every page the day you read this.
What matters far more is the visible FAQ content itself. A clear question-and-answer section still helps real readers. Google also states that "structured data isn't required for generative AI search" (Google Search Central, accessed September 2026), so its AI features read your page text directly. That is the same content advantage behind answer engine optimization, where a plainly answered question is easy for an engine to quote.
Don't confuse the markup with the content. The expandable box is gone, but a well-written FAQ still earns its place, both for the person reading and for the systems now summarizing the web.
What schema still earns rich results?
The schema types that still earn rich results are the ones tied to features Google actively shows. LocalBusiness, Product, Review snippet, Article, and Breadcrumb all remain in Google's current rich-result gallery (accessed September 2026).
For most Malaysian businesses, LocalBusiness is the one to get right first, since it carries your name, address, and hours. A shop gains from Product and Review markup, and a guide fits Article.
The durable lesson is to describe your real content accurately rather than hunt for a trick type. Features come and go, as FAQ just showed, but a rich result built on honest structured data survives each change.
A pattern we see is owners treating search visibility like a one-time purchase: set it up once, then leave it. The FAQ removal is a reminder that the features you earn need checking as Google changes them.
Frequently asked questions
Will FAQ rich results come back?
There is no indication they will. Google removed the feature from Search on 7 May 2026 and deleted its documentation on 15 June 2026. That is how Google usually retires a feature for good, not how it pauses one. Plan as though FAQ rich results are permanently gone, and treat any future return as a bonus, not a strategy.
Do I need to delete all my FAQPage markup?
No, deleting it is optional. FAQPage markup is inert now, and Google's removal notice names no penalty for leaving it. Remove it during your next redesign if you want tidy code, but there is no urgent reason to strip it from live pages today. Your effort is better spent on schema types that still render.
Does an FAQ section still help my SEO?
Yes, the visible FAQ content still helps, even without the rich result. A clear question-and-answer block answers real queries and gives AI answer engines clean text to quote. What ended is the Google search feature, not the value of answering the questions your customers actually ask.
Can FAQ content appear in AI Overviews?
Yes, because Google's AI features read your page content, and Google says they need no special schema. A well-answered question in plain text is exactly what an AI Overview looks for when it summarizes. Schema helped Google render a specific box; it was never what made your answer readable to Google's AI.
What replaced FAQ rich results?
Google named no replacement for the box. The same answers can still be quoted in AI Overviews and AI Mode, which pull from page text across the web and need no special markup. So clear FAQ writing now works toward being quoted in an AI answer rather than shown in a dedicated feature.
Write the answers for people, not the feature
Storming Solutions runs SEO, AEO, and GEO for Malaysian businesses from Kuala Lumpur, and we still write full FAQ sections into the pages we build. We do it because clear answers help readers and AI engines, not because a schema box rewards it, since that box is gone.
