What Is a Knowledge Panel?

A knowledge panel is the information box Google shows alongside search results for a recognized entity: a business, a person, a place, or a product. Google generates it automatically from its Knowledge Graph and sources across the web, so no one can buy or build one to order. You can claim a panel that already exists and suggest edits, but Google decides what the box finally shows.
What does a knowledge panel show?
A knowledge panel shows a compact summary of what Google already knows about one entity. For a business that usually means the name, logo, category, a short description, a website link, and social profiles. For a well-known person or place it can add photos, key dates, and related entities.
Google's own definition is plain. Knowledge panels are "information boxes that appear on Google when you search for entities (people, places, organizations, things) that are in the Knowledge Graph" (Google Knowledge Panel Help). The operative words are "in the Knowledge Graph": no record there, no panel.
The box is read-only for searchers, and mostly read-only for the business it describes.
It reflects what Google has already concluded, not anything you typed into a form.
How does Google decide who gets a knowledge panel?
Google shows a knowledge panel only for entities it already holds in its Knowledge Graph, the database of things it recognizes. The same help page notes that a panel's information "comes from various sources across the web", not from the business directly.
Google built this model in 2012, describing search as understanding "things, not strings".
The panel is a symptom, not a lever. It appears once enough trusted sources agree on who you are, which is why most small businesses never trigger a full one. Retrieval works on the record behind the box, so the work that earns a panel is the same work that earns AI mentions: one consistent identity everywhere.
A clean identity is also what lets a modern results page attach your logo, links, and details to a brand search in the first place.
Can you create or claim a knowledge panel?
You cannot create a knowledge panel, and no one can sell you one. What you can do, once a panel for your entity exists, is claim it. Google lets a verified official representative suggest edits after confirming their identity.
Claiming is not control. Google's policy does not manually create or delete panels, and corrections need strong evidence before they show.
In our experience, a pattern we see is owners asking how to set up or buy their knowledge panel. The honest answer reframes the work: you earn the record first, and the box follows.
How is a knowledge panel different from a Google Business Profile?
A knowledge panel is generated by Google; a Google Business Profile is created and managed by you. People confuse them because both can show business details beside a search result.
| Knowledge panel | Google Business Profile | |
|---|---|---|
| Who makes it | Google, automatically | You, by signing up |
| What it covers | Any recognized entity | Local businesses with a location or service area |
| What you control | Suggest edits only, if verified | Hours, photos, posts, categories |
| Where it shows | Brand and entity searches | The local map pack and Maps |
For most Malaysian SMEs, the Business Profile is the practical priority, because you control it directly and a complete one feeds the same identity signals. Keeping your name, address, and phone number identical across the web (NAP consistency) and adding schema markup on your own site are the levers you actually hold.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay Google to get a knowledge panel?
No. Knowledge panels are generated automatically and are not for sale, by Google or anyone else. A vendor promising to "create your knowledge panel" is selling something that does not work that way. What genuinely helps is strengthening the entity record behind it: consistent listings, schema, and coverage from sources Google trusts. The panel appears when that record is strong enough, never because money changed hands.
Why does my competitor have a knowledge panel and I don't?
Usually because more trusted sources describe them as a distinct entity. A competitor with press coverage, a Wikidata entry, consistent directory listings, and clear schema gives Google more to work with. Your own record may be thinner, or split across name variants and old addresses. Tightening that identity is the work that makes a panel more likely. There is no switch to flip.
How do I claim my knowledge panel?
Search your business name, and if a panel appears, look for a "Claim this knowledge panel" link. Google asks you to verify your identity as an official representative, often through a linked profile or account. Once verified, you can suggest edits. You still cannot rewrite it freely, because corrections need strong evidence and pass through Google's systems before showing.
Is a knowledge panel a ranking factor?
No. A knowledge panel is a display feature, not a ranking signal, so it does not move your organic positions up or down. What it does is occupy prominent space on a brand search and shape first impressions. It also signals that Google recognizes you as an entity, and that recognition is what matters for AI visibility, since engines recommend entities they can identify.
Do knowledge panels matter for AI search?
Yes, indirectly. The Knowledge Graph behind a panel is part of how Google and AI assistants identify and describe a business. A clear entity record is what lets ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google's AI Overviews name you confidently. You can watch how those engines currently describe you by measuring your AI visibility over time. The panel is one visible sign that the record exists.
Earning the record behind the box
Storming Solutions runs SEO, AEO, and GEO for Malaysian businesses from Kuala Lumpur, and entity work sits at the center of it. Our honest stance: chasing the panel directly is backwards, because the box is a byproduct of an identity the web already agrees on.
